Generali, DH came home with a beautiful little cook book for me, I was a bit underwhelmed by it initially but on reading through there are some really nice things in it. Fennel seed brittle for example. I've made a lot of brittles, but fennel seed would be so logical an extension of the idea of candies fennel seed. Hibiscus jamun.......oh, I love the sound of that, some beautiful pairing ideas. I might have come up with mint sorbet. But I doubt With my thought process I would have partners with candied kumquats.
Lots I wouldn't like too mind.

I'm sure I've eaten food that's had turmeric in it before .... probably it's shoved in curries. But I don't know what it tastes like.... it's a yellow one isn't it.
In the past I've done Yorkshires with herbs and Yorkshires with onions/herbs ... and I know you can make a dessert by adding fruit/sugar (but never bothered to).
My experience of food is "plain food" mostly. I love spicy stuff.... but don't have the knowledge/experience of individual spices to know which ones do what. I'd just look at a recipe and if I saw things I recognised/had/could get I'd use them... otherwise I'd move on to a simpler one.
In cookery programmes they always say "taste it - and adjust/season to taste" - and I always think "if you taste it and it's rank, how do you know what's wrong or what to add?"0 -

I suppose I know from experience. But also by smell. I have to cook to smell a lot rather than taste ( makes it hard when I cannot smell much, but haven't had that for a over a year now, maybe since I started these drugs actually).
Turmeric is yellow yes.
Do you know what cinnamon tastes like? And how it smells? If do can you see they're kind of the same.0 -

Yes, I've had that a few times.... I think maybe a cinnamon biscuit or bun... and maybe on the top of custard tarts at school dinners?
Edit: Just looked that up, that's nutmeg it seems to be saying.
But I know cinnamon smell from my sister's Xmas candles/smellies (I think).
Edit 2: Ah, just wiki'd it - and you get it in an indian curry too (you just throw it away). Didn't know it was cinnamon, I always call that bit "the piece of wood".0 -

Nutmeg is delicious. Its good with spinach too. You could try cinnamon again quite inexpensively by buying something at the bakery at a super market or something. Cheaper than experimenting. And yes, you get sticks in some curries.
We use lots of cinnamon, and buy it in big bags ( because that's cheaper than those piddle bottles if you know you'll use it) . I might put a pinch in a coffee or apple tea for example. A sprinkling on some lamb ( with other spices) or on porridge or on some baked apple. I use it with lots of sweet and savoury food really. Some people cannot stand it.0 -

It all comes down to simple things with me: if I've not experienced it then I am unlikely to buy/use it in case I don't like it. Nothing worse than spending time/money gathering ingredients together, to make something lovely .... that tastes rank because then you are still hungry, have a kitchen full of washing up and still need to find something to eat and start again with cooking
I've had little chance in life to experience tastes/foods without any form of commitment. So my mum's basic roasts/stews, regular boiled veg, school dinners, works' cheap canteens and some cheap indian restaurants is pretty much my lot.
Once, at work, some sales rep took me and my boss to a "special fish restaurant" .... and I chose cod in batter/chips because if I'd chosen anything new and hated it (skin/eyes, or taste) then I'd have sat there with nothing to eat, which would be daft.... and feeling guilty at wasting it.0 -
