If it's any consolation at all, in addition to getting the garage door repaired, bathroom sealed, exterior work done, there is a very strong chance I am now in the market for a new cooker. Might be eating a lot of salads and microwave meals for a while!

Just occurred to me, that was rather inappropriate phrasing in light of your dietary restrictions. Sorry lir. Its been a bit of an afternoon (included some precautionary fire blanket action).

No. Admittedly my feet are a bit non-standard in shape - wide and flat at the front, narrow in the heel, big toe going more or less straight forwards rather than inwards a bit.

Ahh.... OK, I can see why that may be an issue. :)
Maybe I would if I was buying high end shoes, but I have a more modest budget. .

Yes not entirely sure it's just high end shoes, I always buy the same converse or Nike sizes online too, but I see your point.

Don't you find some manufacturers fit fairly consistently?

I happily buy Church's or Loakes online for myself as I know exactly what size I am in those brands.

Same for Mrs McT with Jimmy Choo or Louboutin.... She knows the sizes in each that fit for most styles..... Hell, she's even got me trained to buy half a size different for particularly pointy versions like Anouk or So Kate. :o

    ... it's a whole different world.....

I don't buy shoes with names.... I've picked up a couple of £4 pairs from charity shops about 2 years ago that were a good buy "for work", fairly flat court shoes, unworn, leather. Bargain! That's work shoes for life right there!

I have to try shoes on, I'm a 4½ old sizes, which doesn't quite match with the 36/37 in shops - and sometimes, some shoes I need a 3 in (e.g. the walking shoes I bought in 2002 for £8 at Hawkshead).

One foot's wider than the other and both are quite wide, so I do have to have flexible shoes (which means leather) ... and as they're unaffordable I keep an eye out all the time just in case I find some really cheap that I can afford.

I wear the crocs style as often as possible as they're not really size-based :)

Fear of fire in the kitchen ... of appliances bursting into flames, or starting a silent sneaky fire after you've turned it off.....

Welcome to the fear club :)

I hate cooking after dark, or using anything electrical after dark (except the PC/TV and stuff I've been used to for years).

Yes, that's how I read it too. But I think I would have misunderstood it if I didn't know PN's posting style and views on kitchens (and on being single).

Thank you. DD has moved the hamster cage upstairs for safety. The dog is scared of the open treaded stairs, so there's no risk of her coming up.

DD is playing with the dog now, but is unimpressed that the dog clearly prefers me. ;)

There are so many things wrong with the way that school is managed that I don't know where to begin.

What's the latest on Youngest's support?

Everything and I mean everything, is up in the air as they have just moved to the new build, so goodness only knows what is happening with his support...at the moment, it appears his friends are doing the supporting and the making sure he is ok.

His friends are great actually, they stick to him like glue and look out for him in a way that he doesn't realise they are doing it so he doesn't feel different. They have all changed their routine to eating from the swanky new outside cafe like thing they have at the new build instead of the main canteen/cafe inside as youngest cannot cope with the Atrium (the area where the inside dining area is) but they have made him feel like they all prefer it rather than them looking out for him and protecting him.

His exams start next week and despite me trying to sort out arrangements since late last year and asking what was happening before the move (they didn't have a clue when I asked before Easter), apparently it's all change again from the expected plan of year 11 doing lessons and exams at the old build to year 11 doing exams in the old build and lessons in the new build...and they have somehow conveniently forgotten about the travel arrangements again!

This is no short walk between the old and new buildings, we are talking approx 2 miles so they will either be walking, sitting an exam or in a lesson with no time to rest or eat and backwards and forwards all day but this is not the biggest issue....the biggest issue is that youngest doesn't go anywhere on his own and not all the exams will have his friends there! Coupled with that is his EDS/HMS and asthma, he physically cannot walk the two miles AND do an exam, he will be in too much pain or completely wiped out.

His head of year was supposed to ring me yesterday with what is planned, despite two reminders, no phone call was forthcoming.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.

That all just sounds completely half-witted. No half-decent school needs to worry about school councils or debating societies being subversive!

It must drive you to distraction, that type of attitude.

Oh yes, I have always advocated freedom of expression (within legal boundaries of course) and having a healthy attitude to debate and the exchange of ideas.

Maybe I would if I was buying high end shoes, but I have a more modest budget. I mostly buy at the low end of the real leather part of the price spectrum. Wouldn't touch synthetic pretending-to-be-leather shoes, though.

I've just replaced my court shoes, the last ones were purchased for £3 or something silly about 10 years ago. I splashed out this time, spent £20!

Now to replace my trainers, the last pair cost me absolutely nothing and have lasted me 2 or 3 years, almost got some last week but I was not going to pay the silly prices being asked, they've got to be under a tenner.

As you can probably tell, my shoe spend doesn't amount to much, I've probably not spent as much in my entire adult life on shoes as it would cost to get one pair of the fake Louboutin's. Really cannot understand why someone would, especially for a pair that looks completely impractical for daily living (plus, being only a size 4, my feet would look exceedingly silly in a pair of them :rotfl:)

Oh, don't be silly. I'm not so mean spirited I hope. :). Most of the time. :D

Enjoy the salads! Last night I risked cucumber and carrot raw, but left the lettuce the others had.

My feet used to be a reliable size, now I have shoes over a couple of sizes. :(.

I wear bare feet or socks as much as possible. My most comfortable shoes ATM are a mid heel pair of shoes I never thought I'd wear as much when I bought them. They seem to fix my ankle with ought disrupting my back.

Talking of eBay, that would be a great place to look for a cheap replacement.

I don't use it as much as I did, I found the opposite of Hamish, that the recession inlyeant people getting rid of ony complete rubbish. But the same person might be selling their nice jewellery probably isn't selling perfectly good household items or furniture to be replaced by new on a bit of a whim, which is what was certainly happening last decade.

If the uplift in house purchased is anything to go on, then those people should be back.

If anyone sees any used block paving near me, let me
