I was about to have a shower, and had popped back downstairs to put the washing machine on.

It might be nothing at all to do with the steam - I am no electrical engineer, and I've done no more than trying to switch in on (and very swiftly off) again in terms of investigating. That's just my best guess.

I never leave an oven or a washing machine unattended. Ever.
Nor a toaster, nor a frying pan. Nothing, ever.
    :)

To be honest, I'm not too keen on boilers etc either. With unlimited money and designing my own house I'd have a separate outbuilding containing the washing machine and boiler :) ... on the basis if it all goes wrong it's "out there, not in here".

The hot water tank is normally outside in Sydney. We don't get a hard frost so needn't fear burst pipes.

That reminded me of a horrific accident a few years ago - where a baby died when some tank above their head had a problem

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/somerset/7175037.stm
The coroner said: "There's no dispute that the death was a direct consequence of a problem that occurred when the thermostat in the immersion heater failed.

"Boiling water overwhelmed the cold water tank which split and cascaded onto Rhianna who was asleep in the room below with her sister."

And this one, a woman: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/cornwall/3035606.stm
A mother-of-two from Cornwall died after scalding water poured out of a water tank through a ceiling and on to her bed as she slept, an inquest has heard.

Not in the least mean sprited, doesn't mean that I wasn't inconsiderate though.

    . :(

Not at all, I read cookery books for a hobby and post on the o
Ld style 'what are you cooking for supper ' thread so i never worry about reading about food I cannot eat. :).

Similarly, I cannot have babies, yet am excited about friends having them. I see the two as different I think. My problems aren't others, theirs aren't mine!

Had to go to Birmingham and back today, what a waste of a beautiful day. Didn't mind needing to go, but would have been happy to do it on a rainy day.

There's something I very much want to go near to Birmingham to see, but need to be well enough and would love it to be a day DH was around.

Today he has hauled 17 wheelbarrows of muck. Our muck barrow is twice the size of a normal wheelbarrow. Cavernous. He just ate, and went straight out to move more.

Just thought I'd come and tell you that we have been standstill on the M6 for 30 minutes. There is a cow on the southbound carriageway. The whole motorway is shut!

Oh Doozer. What a nuisance. Although if you've got to be stuck on the motorway, it's better to know there's just a confused cow up ahead, and not a horrific accident.

I hope they get the cow to safety and the motorway running again soon.
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.
