Gen, I too don't like or rely on pain killers ( though my drugs have an element of pain control in them that's because if they work it hurts less! Rather than them being pain killers. Infact....they actually cause some discomfort)

from BUT its worth understanding how pain feed back can supersede delayed pain control! Particular in understanding how others manage pain. Living in pain is no op more of a life than living on some drugs, and potentially much less of one.

I've tried to be sensible, to assess things as the last lot wear off and see if I need more.

So this morning it didn't really hurt any more. A slight ache. Ok so we'll see what happens if I don't take anything. Hmm....ok when I get to work.

Try a bit longer. Get stuck into a big policy paper I'm re-writing (much less grand than it sounds). Fail to think about the pain at all until lunchtime.

Go to the library at lunch for a snooze as is my occasional guilty pleasure. No real pain. Wake up and head back to the office. Call the wife. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OWWWWWW!!! Ah yes, other ear. No problemo.

I will take painkillers before bed just to try to sleep through the night as that's an important part of getting over the op I feel.

I'm not being critical of others' choices but I'd always rather find a way round taking medicine long-term. For a few days or weeks is fine but if I can do something else after that then that's better. All medicine has side effects after all. I suspect that half the pills my in-laws take are to manage the side effects of other things.

I took medication for anxiety for a while. I soon realised that this would be forever but hated what it did to my memory. I decided to try other things and found out in the end that giving up caffeine has completely eliminated the anxiety. It's amazing. I wasn't even having much.

Fascinating stuff. I almost want to be there to learn more! Hope it goes well for you.

    Agree with all of this.
I don't like taking pills/tablets. I really dislike swallowing them. When I injured my back, I had to take painkillers. I tried putting it off, as was in agony. The pain made me take them, & I expected they'd do a lot less than they did. I miscalculated when to order a repeat prescription, & owing to a weekend ended up with 1 day with no painkillers. I thought it'd be ok. I thought wrong!:o

I only did 2 courses though, for similar reasons to yourself.

I don't mind the physical taking of the pills. It's the addiction (with pain meds especially) and the side effects that bother me.

I try to take what I need to get well and stop as soon as is reasonable.

In places like Australia and the UK with a paid-per-visit GP model (from the GPs POV) and little or no cost to the patient, it's easy to get into an over-medicated state. It's alarmingly easy to get Valium over here for example. I could easily go to a couple of GPs a week and get a pretty solid habit going:eek:. Actually, that could be quite lucrative.

Finally instructed a solicitor, the one I "chose" never returned my call on Monday morning, nor yesterday, so I phoned at 9am to be told she's in at 9.30 and would phone me then. By 10am (and still now), still no call, so I just closed my eyes and picked the next cheapest one off my short list. (short list, not a shortlist).

Top advice: Put two weeks into finding a solicitor and getting quotes, asking further questions, mulling etc before phoning for any viewings.

Funny that isn't it - we'll load a fork with a huge piece of pie and some chips balanced on top... and force it in, but give us an incy wincy little tablet and we struggle :)

So could opening up a British Fish & Chip Shop .... without resorting to the dark side.

Years ago, about 1980 or so, my friend was the manager of a fish/chip shop on a main road, with 3-4 car parking spaces in front of it. She told me her boss' finances and said he'd borrowed £80k to start up and had paid it off within 2 years. And he'd employed her as a manager, so wasn't working all hours God sent himself....

I know people have mentioned buying electric toothbrushes before, Amazon has a great deal of the day on the top of the range Braun Oral B one: down from £200 to £59.99.

Well worth it. I have an Oral B 5000, I'm guessing a previous incarnation as it was the top of the range but they've now added a tongue cleaning mode!

I thought I'd left mine in a hotel the other week, was really disappointed until it turned up in the car!

I am wondering if zag might have an appropriate diagram or link to show why in some cases /conditions pain feedback ( probably not right term) means this is the wrong way to approach pain control.

I am NOT disputing what you do for you. As I say, apart from my prescribed meds which are not pain killers I take no pain control now. Often this is a really stupid move because when you take pain medication too late rather than too early its less effective. Its to do with how feedback works.

Long term medication sucks. And I agree, much, much, is probably over prescribed and for too long. Its nice to have a choice not to take it. For many its take it or die. :(. I'd like not to take mine, shall I try ;)

I have a few ideas. It'll be time to work for myself soon enough. Not today, not tomorrow but soon and for the rest of my life.

Now big dog is moving towards end of life care she has two different types of pain control. They work in different ways for the same problem, she is low dose for both.

One is yummy and the others want it. We call it 'pain killer bicky' :o

The other, and opiate, is obviously vile and she is still on a tiny dose thank good ness. We can loose it in raw food most days, but otherwise I stick it down her throat in a bit of butter or solidified animal cooking fat. Its also gone in on sausages ( which she we swallows whole ) and various other left overs. The trick is to keep it swallow size not taste size.

I just asked everyone else who I knew had bought a house recently. Strangely the first one I picked who my friend said was really good completely failed to return my calls / email, so I then picked the one my sister is using at the moment who has turned out to be pretty good so far. I will reserve final judgment until the whole process is done though!
