I sense you are trying to make some kind of rhetoric point, but I think you're quite misguided.Blackbeard_of_Perranporth wrote: »What does the government provide for the punnet truck driver?
House, no, probably private HA
Medical care, no, probably BUPA scheme
They have the same access to NHS services which are free at point of use as everyone else.
Bins emptiesd, no, probably SerCo, pricate ciompany
These are council provide services and it's paid by the householder paying their council tax
Schooling, no, probably an acedamy, charitable trusts
There are plenty of private scholarships, apprenticeships and bursuries available, like with anything it is upto the individual to apply for such opportunities, like with any job
Dentists, what is one of them (private)
Most people pay for dentists, free dental work is reserved for those in the serious depths of welfare
Pension, no, and they are squirming even more out of that
Everyone has the opportunity to have a pension if so so wish, it's well known that some are better than others
Effective corporation tax collection, forget!
I work for the NHS, and I can tell you, that I came from mainstream education, I do not have private health care provided to me by my employer outside the regular occupational health that all good employers provide (public or private). My employer has not bought me a house and my bins are collected by the council because I pay my council tax.
I receive more or less the same financial help as your punnet truck driver.. only I work for a public service and hence receive my wages from the public purse.. thereafter I have to pay my own way.. Just like mr private punnet truck driver.
Plus there are plenty of privately employed people on low wages who will be in some way supported by government provided benefits.. Or concessions of some kind:www: Progress Report :www:

The litmus test of the current pay settlements and the recent pension reforms in the public sector, will be its effect on the recruitment and retention of quality staff in the years ahead. In my area of the MOJ we now have, thanks to the freeze on recruitment a rapidly ageing workforce, most of which are desperate to leave as soon as. The worrying aspect to this is that in the one area where limited recruitment has taken place since 2010 (London), the current package of benefits on offer, has not been attractive enough to recruit sufficient staff to take on the stresses involved. They are now 300 staff short in inner London and even unlimited overtime payments aren't working.
Even a die-hard public servant like myself saw that the public finances needed sorting in 2010, but you don't run and plan public services on the needs of one (or is it now 2?)5 year spending round.
Make the most of our first world public services while you can folks, trust me, the Sh*ts-storm cometh!.“Britain- A friend to all, beholden to none”. 🇬🇧0 -

The East India Company, and empire in general was the first thing which struck my thoughts as well.

In the NHS some staff do bank work at other trusts. Rather than do additional hours in their own hospital.
Under the Freedom of Information Act write to your hospital trust and ask what they spend on bank staff ? Also ask about staff sickness rates, how many are off for long periods. In the NHS there's an entitlement to full pay for months. Something which is so obviously abused.0 -
There is a bit of a sickness problem I grant you.. Sometimes the additional stress and pressure of trying to deliver even simply adequate care to patients through all the other !!!!!!!! that goes on top of the job is believe it or not quite damaging to a nurses health.:www: Progress Report :www:

I put it down to a change of culture. The old hands are dependable and reliable. Do the job for more than money. New generation want it all for doing little. Dont realise how hard life is in the private sector either.
There's no financial grounds for pay to be linked to inflation. Companies would go bust running like that.0 -
The fact is that without myself and my colleagues in the public sector there would be no pallets, no roads, no punnets, no shops to sell them in, no economy, no laws, no education and no civilisation whatsoever.0
-
In my own 'sphere' local managers have recently banned people on their rest days from undertaking overtime duties out of area such is their worry about staff tiredness.
No way to run a public service I would suggest.“Britain- A friend to all, beholden to none”. 🇬🇧0
