I didn't mean you try it but many do. However it does annoy us when the same people keep trying to get on with a tenner or even a twenty. I mean are they having a laugh? A £20 note?

    A twenty is ridiculous!

When I was at school we had a "bus fare jar" at home to keep loose change for the bus, as our buses are exact fare only.

These days I have a Travelcard now anyway.

I definately made sure I had change after that. It just never occurred to me before that.

Exactly! I just thought I'd pay for something with a tenner in a shop (and apologise to them too haha) so didn't think of a bus as different! But will from now on. They'll be getting all the change back for the rest of the week now!

"Drivers are not able to accept £50 notes and may not always have sufficient change for other large denomination notes. In certain locations, where the driver has insufficient change, he may provide you with a Change Voucher in lieu of cash which may be redeemed at an office of the local operating company. Where appropriate, further details are contained in the ‘Guide to Fares and Tickets’ of the relevant Stagecoach operating company."

I wouldn't call £10 a large denomination note but at least I know the policy now!

As a former cabbie, it's no worse than someone that asks at 3pm on Saturday afternoon if you can drop them 2 minutes up the road (£3 on our meters), then eats all your £1 coins with a £20 note.

Again, if you ask before you get in the car, I may be more accommodating, as I can generally change it for £10/2x£5 before we leave. If I'm running straight to another job, it's a lot more difficult.

Mostly it's the public who have given us this attitude problem. You have no idea how hard our job really is. We have to take all sorts of abuse. You start the day jolly and by the end you end up not caring, it's nothing personnel though.

The same could be said about a lot of jobs though. I used to work in retail, and the abuse and threats we got was shocking. We all used to say, that everyone should try and work in retail for a week and see what it was like. Like you say, you could start off in a good mood, and end up in a bad one....but even if that's the case, then you should still remain polite and grit your teeth, you are after all a customer facing representative for the company, so unless you getting shocking and unacceptable abuse, you've just got to get on with it.

I used to want to be a bus driver when I was at school! :D

The abuse I've taken from a couple of drivers has been very personal and I did nothing to deserve it.

I've also worked in tough jobs, I worked with addicts for a long time, I don't think there's a swear word invented that I've not been called.
I've been assaulted a couple of times and threatened plenty.

But you have to remain professional. Bus drivers who act like the ones I described earlier shouldn't be in the job as far as I'm concerned.

It costs nothing to be civil, if people can't be civil to the passengers who aren't causing them grief they are in the wrong job.
