Okay, have it your own way.

I tried to help and give you some constructive advice despite the inconsistencies in your story, for instance the bus company involved seems to have changed from First to Stagecoach.

So to summarise; you didn't have a problem getting change, you were carried on the bus as required, your driver advised you that tendering a note could cause you problems, and because of that you didn't like your driver's attitude.

I'll give you a final piece of advice; when you board a bus and only have a £10 note, before asking for the fare try saying something like " Hello, I'm sorry I only have a £10 note can you change it for (and then your fare)", you will find most if not all bus drivers will respond positively to your acknowledgement that you are aware a smaller sum would be preferred.

You know have all the answers you need, so good luck in your future travels, but maybe avoid such places as Birmingham, Edinburgh, London, a large chunk of Europe, where bus drivers don't give change, or in some cases don't handle fares at all.

Because First and Stagecoach do the exact same journey, I sometimes get the First but infrequently. There are no inconsistencies, I added the bit about them accepting notes after I'd spoken to them.

I said to the driver I was sorry but it was all I had. I'm not sure if I mentioned this earlier but assumed it was obvious, I'm British you know ;)

Just because I'm the original poster, doesn't mean I am immediately to blame (as 99% of these threads go), bus drivers (shock horror) are incapable of rudeness and incompetence (such as yesterday evening when my ticket was refused because the original driver had put the wrong boarding/alight info in the morning - yes I normally get a lift but the car was in the garage).

Actually, the bus I use most often drops me direct at my door and for all the issues Ive had with drivers, its far more cost effective for me to get the bus than take a taxi, its 9 pounds a week for me for unlimited journeys in my area, 12 pounds for further afield.

I dont agree most buses are empty, in my area public transport is very well used.

A 3 mile journey in a taxi in my area is around £7, depending on the fare stages it might be the same in a taxi, it might be a bit cheaper but if you buy an all day ticket for 4 pounds, you get unlimited use, if you dont buy a weekly ticket.

Also, I dont have anyone to share a taxi with on day to day journeys. My mum lives two miles away in the opposite direction and she has a free bus pass.

Taxis are probably still well used where I am, but I got a taxi on Sunday, because I had to due to early morning bus and train times, was the first taxi I had been in in over a year.

Plus, there are days I make 4 bus journeys a day, the more you use the bus, the more cost effective it is, if you have an all day ticket or a weekly or monthly ticket, taxis would certainly work out dearer if you were making multiple journeys.

Most buses aren't empty. If I get on the bus at 10am, it's pretty much full. As is the 12pm bus coming home. I don't have to walk half my journey either. In fact, it pretty much drops me where I want to go.

Taxis are far more expensive and not everyone has someone to share one with.

Why not, with your tenner, pay for as many people behind you in the queue as you can?
The driver won't have to give you any change (if there's a bit left over-tip him)
The people behind you will think 'what a lovely thing to do'
And you will be happy as you've been generous to a number of people with no thought to renumeration and all for the cost of a couple of pints.
    Everyone's a winner.

I guess you've never got on a bus in Bristol then. Buses ate standing room only at 6.30am, 7am, 8am, 9am and all times in between, and then they calm down a bit then are rammed again from 3pm til 6pm, again all times in between.

It's not the buses in Bristol that hold up the traffic, it's the people who drive their kids to and from schools, and cyclists in the bus lanes

When I used to get weekly passes which cost £11 the drivers always seemed to sigh about me giving them a tenner and a pound! They probably wanted to have the change to be fair, and didn't want to have to find their note wallet/envelope.
