We'll both run sticks along railings as we apologise to playgoer for this unscheduled diversion on her/his route to the Ticket Cancellation Orifice.

Absolutely - apologies Playgoer now back to the task :-

Have a read back from post number 28 above for advice on strengthening the point about a POPLA code.

Then when you are ready to send in your appeal do both the on-line submission and send a hard copy by post

For the on-line submission - think there is a 3000 character limit in the text box which your letter is likely to exceed but you can attach up to 5 files of various kinds (word, pdf, jpegs for scanned images etc) so be prepared to attach document(s) should you need to.
I recently submitted one to PE and only put something like "I wish to submit an appeal as the registered keeper of (car reg) to the PCN no xxxxxx - please see attached documents" in the text box and attached a pdf of my appeal letter. Make sure you take a screen shot of your submission.

    For postal hard copy
Don't sign it with your normal signature - just a squiggle will do
go to P.O. with the letter though and ask counter staff for a free proof of posting.
    ATB CC

Further thought given you will be away April
Do you have a close friend/family member who could either check your mail or would be willing for you to give their address to PE as the mailing address for their responses to you - If so they could contact you if something arrives.
If you did get a POPLA code while you are away you have only 28 days to submit your appeal - but you could pre-prepare one before you go and leave your relative instructions on how to submit it for you in your absence.
    Anyway worth a thought.

Thanks to all for the above - really enjoyed the Jenny Josephs diversion! I'm off this morning to talk to the store owner where I bought something, and to the others where I didn't. I had a very restless night, as although I wasn't worried, my brain wouldn't let it go - if shopkeepers respond to anxious pensioners with bags and circles under the eyes, it should be OK! Then when I get back I'll sit down to the task of emailing my appeal, printing off & posting a hard copy. I've thought of a way I could check emails while I'm abroad, though a real posted letter would remain a difficulty, as there's no-one I could burden with that task. I imagine that PEye would respond to an online appeal with some kind of response by email? Or is that being silly? and how do I take a screen shot, please? Hope your 105th went well, ampersand! :-)

Morning PG - here's some tips

I think when I did the on-line submission it allowed me to right click the screen, and choose print from the drop down box so I could capture everything I'd typed in to keep a record should they say they didn't get it.
Try that but if that doesn't work - on your keyboard there's a key with the letters "PrtSC" on it - it's usually over to the right up in the top row of keys (often above the Delete and Insert Keys)

Press that - open a new blank word document then right click and select paste - you should get an image of the screen being pasted into the word document. You may need to do about three, scrolling down each time to get the next part of the form to be showing on the screen.

Anyway have a play before you put the appeal in so you know how to do it should you need to.
    Good luck and well done!!

Thanks, ColliesCarer. I've just found a possible snag in my approach to the shop manager - how does s/he/ get in touch with PE? There's no contact email on their website, only a phone number - which looks like the one you ring to pay a fine. If s/he does agree to cancel the charge, and then hits the same circular handoff (which it obviously is) s/he might just give up. Any advice?

plagoer - you do NOT have to tailor any element of your time away to fit pe's crooked manifesto. At that rate, you'd be pushing the plane, then clinging to a wing, while carbon shovelling into offshore a/cs .
They must jump in accordance with even the slack and variable BPA regulation.
Every departure from regulated practice is a weapon for you.
You give broad dates of absence, make clear that no action takes place in that time, that any contravention of this will be pursued by you at Court stage, if it goes that far, but only after your return

re:screen shot, my keyboard has a button just the right of the F12 one:'Print Screen Sys.Req.'
Now, mine didn't seem to do anything and after a time of googling How to?s etc. gave it away. The hard copy sent+CoP for same more than makes up for that. If someone could quickly sort a screen shot for you, that would be fine, but falure to capture one is not a hanging offence. At times you must just get up, wander outside for a bit with a cuppa, then come back. Remember we're all still here, in fact I am missing Prayer brekkie right now, but this is in the spirit of things we discuss, so...
Definitely let Steve C. have a copy - he can email it through as well. Explain what you've explained here about going away. with sth like 'I have no confidence in this company's practices, despite putting put them on notice of my absence between x and x. Please ensure that any POPLA code is valid ONLY from my sight of it on return, should this unenforceable 'invoice' not be withdrawn. I will advise you of that return' - or similar.
Don't worry if he's away/on auto- reply atm. It may look generic at first. You need to get under his radar.

    CC's squiggle point is *grade.

I have only ever had pe email addies unworkable, with this always coming back:

I don't think you need to worry - they will have the number - they need to use it to update PE with their list of reg:numbers of staff/visitors etc so that they don't get a nasty surprise in the post.

But I seem to recall seeing a thread were someone had found a number that got through to a person - I'll see if I can find it for you.

Oh and something I forgot to mention before - I put in an on-line appeal to PE but got a paper rejection letter - maybe worth stating in your appeal you would like both email and postal responses.

The rejection letter arrived about 12 days after the on-line appeal
so hopefully yours might come through before you go.

Also you may just get a letter refusing to allow your appeal but don't worry if that happens - just come back on and you'll get help to send them a nice letter of encouragement to change their minds. Plenty of good letters and letter writers here to help.

Apologies again CC, we're all here together:-)
playgoer, this can't be the first time that shop managers have had to deal with this.
Your judgment of character will come in here: if mgr lacks welly, ask to go higher. Do your best Penelope Keith and insist, with firm and kindly charm. It does work. You will instinctively know how to be with each one, I do not underestimate how sapping and undermining of core-you and sense of self this has been/is still.

-gives phone no.s and em addies.

Right - just tweaked that site so it shows. playgoer, replace each + with . and you'll find it.

    Hi PG,
The phone number to give to the shop if they try to fob you off is
01772 450970 - I've just dialled it - putting 151 in front of course - don't want those scammers to get my number.
Anyway it's an auto ans with three options
1/ for joe public if they wish to pay - yeah right
2/ for clients to discuss charges or permits
    3/ for all other enquiries

Also I know this goes without saying but under no circumstances should you speak to them yourself - even if the shopkeeper tries to pass you the phone!!
