Can your day get any better? Fantastic job with lovely people and your mum who wished you luck. Wonderful news indeed.

Have a good nights sleep, wake refreshed and ready for the day ahead. Not sure if you were serious about the book though, as it could be perceived as ignorance, a lack of willingness to engage and participate in the general conversation. Perhaps have one about your person as an icebreaker, but never actually open it and start reading, just have it to hand. It could still be a good icebreaker, lots of comments on favourite authors, favourite stories, which could branch out into books made into films.. never as good as the books!

You will have much to contribute to the conversation, you just feel you have nothing to say that anyone will want to hear. You do, but, try not to engage in conversations about religion, politics, same sex relationships or immigration. Guaranteed you will offend someone!

Again, great to see the day went well and is an indication of what to expect from now on. More importantly, hope they feel the same way about you that you feel about them and they take you on permanently.

Agree about the book not being such a good idea. My brother made the mistake in a job of keep leaving the premises and coming home for his lunch. He got seen as not being a good mixer and didn't pass the probation.

The book idea could go either way so needs to be a case of judging the situation I think. How about a newspaper as that prompts conversation with others then.

  • Just been reading this thread. I'm chuffed for you :) Good luck and I'm sure it will continue to go well.

ps. I think the joke you made at the interview was fantastic, definitely helped you. In some interviews it would have been a bad bad idea, in some it can help you stand out and show that you have a sense of humour.

Keep up the good work, so glad you have been given a second chance.

Congratulations from another who has just come across your thread.

I really needed cheering up today and noticed your thread about getting a paid work placement and it has just made me smile so thanks.

Good for you for keeping going to make your life better and I agree with the others that your mum's text is a small step, but a step nonetheless. I hope you have let her know how you are getting on.

Also, most people feel very nervous about their first few days and whether they will fit in. It sounds great that all the staff eat together so my advice would be to join in, listen a lot and don't take a book! If you come across to them as you do on here, you will do brilliantly!!

No anti-book comments necessary: they do surprise me..

Scuffer lunches from Manageress's bro-in-law's little deli with everyone else.

His personality will take him to good places; shared tastes in reading/films are another way to link and know people better.

Hailstorms here Scuffer - safe ride home.

  • Chuffed for you!

Question though, if and when they ask you what you did in the past are you going to be honest or lie?
