I might be breaking the law, but I have a busy schedule and I receive important info by text. I sometimes have to deliver equipment to clients and they all seem to send a text message rather than call to ask how long I'll be. That's frustrating.
Get yourself a decent phone / handsfree combination and it will read the text to you like mine does.

Do you just make these offences up as you go along?
Section 3 of the road traffic act 1988 amended ;)

Cool, I will turn off my engine next time. :rotfl:

Joking aside I've never held up traffic, always keep one eye on the road. never check messages when I'm in the front of ther queue in traffic as that is easier to miss.

On long drives I switch my phone to flight mode to save the battery. I and the rest of the world somehow copes with me not being able to be phoned or texted at such times...

When my son was caught in similar circumstances I called him a **#* for using his mobile but also for failing to spot the copper before he started using it.

When using a phone to text, you can't see what's in front of you never mind what's behind you!

Sort of, using a mobile is stupid, exceeding the speed limit is stupid as are all sorts of other motoring offences. All are dangerous and should be condemned but who is entirely innocent?
Doing the crime with a police vehicle on your tail however is more than stupid.

It shows that they weren't doing proper observations. Which only adds to the offense.

Interesting point about the legalities of using the phone with the engine off. It's my understanding, possibly incorrectly, that this isn't an offence, correct? If that's the case what would happen if you were caught looking at your phone, stuck in traffic, with your car's stop/start system engaged? Never happened to me, and I never use my mobile in the car anyway, but something I was thinking about the other day when a missed call came through whilst waiting at the traffic lights.

I guess even if it was true.
The engine not running doesnt man the driver isnt in charge of the vehicle
given the start/stop will engage without touching the key

The driver would still be driving and not in charge.

Or 70mph on the M1, in to neutral, engine off and start phoning :D

Clearly, "engine off" can't be the only defining matter!
