.........I am confused why my 3 bed end terrace has walls that are by all accounts thicker than the norm , i am 150% sure i measured correctly but i think i will have to check myself!

me too, sounds like a mistake in measuring to me unless it includes a chimney

More generally, I echo the "grip the SDS end in an ordinary chuck or cut it off" suggestion above and, because the cutting tip is bigger then the shank you can use the bit to pull a draw wire through the hole when you are finished in the unlikely event you really do have a wall with a 500mm cavity.

Dan a standard cavity wall is 300mm, are you sure the first 500mm isn't missing from your tape measure lol
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

Screwfix had the longest SDS bits when I had to go through our 1100mm solid walls.

As above, and as they say, measure twice and drill once, :D:D:D.

I immediately assumed stone walls until I reread,

I's say get an sds drill anyway, if you don't use it now you will later, plus, you can get a decent 1 for about 2 hours worth of a tradesman on short visit.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Is there a window on this wall?

Must be one hell of a reveal if there is.
