I just got a letter from Scottish Power saying that they are sending me a refund, it's been about 1 year since I left them.

At the time they refunded for electric credit but not gas.

I remember at the time they said there 'might' be a credit balance and this would be refunded but assumed that since they didn't refund anything then there wasn't anything to refund.

I think I found the solution to getting former suppliers to listen to you - and no it is not the Ombudsman. But before sharing this little snippet, I'll wait till I get my dosh. I don't want to cause a stampede and delay my own refund in the process! :D
  • Also received a letter from Scottish Power today about credit on a previous Scottish Power energy account, I am a current customer with them, but left previously in 2009.

That prompted me to phone NPower, whom I switched from in August 2012, and there is an outstanding credit of £134.25 which they will be sending me a cheque for.

One would be tempted to claim interest - except it would probably be about twopence on the average amount owing.:D

Scottish Power have owed me £71.17 since I switched to First Utility months ago. I have more or less written it off apart from bombarding them with emails to customer.services@scottishpower.com and booking ringbacks on their free ringback service.

They rarely ring back when they do I ask them when I'm getting my money owed, they say invariably it will be sent within 7 working days.

Scottish Power are useless, no one who leaves them will ever go back.
  • So after phoning Scottish Power over a week ago and hearing nothing back, I phoned them again. They have no record of the complaint that I made, and no record of the refund request. Amazing service!

I'm another waiting for money from Scottish Power. My switches to two separate energy companies completed in mid March and I have phoned them to ask for the money and was told that the account was closed and the money would be refunded within 5 working days. It was not refunded.

It's early days yet but at least they have zeroed my direct debits so at least money is not being paid to them. It is only about £35 but I still intend getting it repaid!

Days before the switch I did ask them for a refund of a large part of over £200 money I was in credit and they DID pay me that money. I did also lower the DD to less than half the monthly payment which also helped, however I wished that I had lowered it to the lowest amount possible because one further payment was made after that.

Therefore it might be worth asking for a refund of any large amount of credit before the switch goes through. Just leave enough to settle up.
  • Hi, I am new here, where is the step by step guide?
    Thanks

What a good idea. My other suggestion is, if you have an online account, take screen shots/print outs of the latest bills/readings before you leave as you won't be able to access these details later. Keep a record of all contact and try to get an actual name as well as them confirming by email any action agreed. Try and get them to send the email while you are on the line! The problem is after you have spoken to someone - which is an achievement in itself - they disappear into the ether and if they don't follow up you are back where you started.
I'm another ex Scottish Power customer and I completely my switch in December last year . I followed their switching procedure to the letter. Ironically my reason for leaving was as much about poor customer service as anything else.
When I finally managed to speak to a real person in February their excuse was they couldn't find the end readings - which my new supplier reckons to have sent! They begged for a week to try and trace them and of course never got back to me as promised. Eventually I joined Facebook simply to have a rant and was contacted by two separate Scottish Power bods. They now have my readings (again) and are supposed to be sorting it. Just a matter of how long to give them this time round.
I believe I am around £200 in credit.

Hi, I'm new here too :)

Unfortunately that means I cannot post links, but noticed there is a search box at the top RHS of the page. Do a seach on "reclaim old bill credit" and change search to "Main Site" and it should be the first article that come up

    HTH :)
