Thank you, that's useful! I'm emailing EDF as well, just as a marker.

Just a thought, why leave the direct debit in place after you've switched, it isn't necessary to receive a refund in your account but it still allows the old supplier to take the next payment, in error or not, and if you owe anything to them you can pay by debit card or whatever, the contract that requires a DD to be in place surely ended when you switched to another provider.
Here's a few more thoughts:
1. Not all suppliers are the same and some suppliers even vary their terms by the tariff they offer
2. Some suppliers do require a DD mandate in place to refund you
3. You do not know for sure until the final bill is prepared whether you are in debit or credit, and any debit will usually be collected via DD (assuming you have previously agreed to pay this way). They cannot do that if you've cancelled.
4. Cancelling the DD mandate before the final account is settled may put you in breach of contract (and some suppliers will cancel the mandate on finalisation anyway)
5. You may incur a charge for cancelling your DD mandate early
6. You may be charged on a more expensive tariff on your final bill if you cancel the DD early
7. If your post is in response to the post before yours, then please refer to my previouis post.
8. Any contract ends when it is finally settled. If it ended earlier, there would be no obligation on either side to settle any final balance.
In all events, any Direct Debit is fully protected by the terms of the Direct Debit Guarantee
If you do not agree with any planned collection, please contact your supplier in the first instance before that collection is made to clarify the position with them.
This is not intended as a complete list of things to think about when considering if you should cancel your DD mandate, but at least it adds quite a few more to the single one you had.0 -
I have had an on-going complaint with Scottish power since 2018 but concerning payments form 2016. I have received awful customer service from saying there is no managers available, saying they will call me back and not doing so, a check meter has been on my property for over 2 years when it was only supposed to be there for a couple of months, canceled appointments which has used my holiday from work so that I was available at the property for them to cancel the evening of the appointment and they lied to the energy ombudsman. We have been dealing with this for 4 years now, we have been unable to switch providers due to the debt on the account, at for years was unable to pay anything towards it due to it being locked in a complaint. We no longer no what to do to. Any help and advice very much appreciated.0

HiI left Symbio energy in December 2020
I am owed a refund of credit.
I have called them chasing up my refund. Only to be told "ALL REFUNDS ARE ON HOLD AS WE ARE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH OUR BANK"
This doesn't sound very promising.
What can I do?0 -
