Have to say I have no issue with paying for music or films. I stream mostly now so see that as money saving, I use napster on a sonos system at home which works out cheaper than buying a CD, use lovefilm and netflix for films and tv series, much cheaper than sky! Also have the odd new release from blinkbox etc.

    people who HATE dvd ads:
skip them and go directly to the menu, it's the rare dvd now that actually prevents you from doing it. If all your dvd's prevent you from skipping, man that's unlucky.

Or buy a blu-ray player. Blu-rays used to be crap for ads, but all the blu-rays we've bought in the past 3 years have all directly gone to the menu or have been self-starting.

Or, get yourself a love film or netflicks subscription.

If you like stuff enough to actively choose to watch or listen, you like it enough to make sure it continues existing.
  • I use spotify for day to day. But if it something I really want to have I get the CD simply for the quality factor. For films we have a subscription to netflix and then also rent movies from sky or from the Apple TV.

So if I buy a CD/MP3 and sell i to my mate, then that's the same, however, if I buy a CD/MP3 and give it to a mate you're not ok with that? - I do realise I'm dumbing this right down also.

Although i'm not in 'The trade' surely artist making music and manage to get into the UK charts are selling more than 100,000, so therefore your money is made and anything after that is great? Many artists sing/play because they enjoy it, not because they want to be become incredibly wealthy, it's companies like yours CK that have made the media industry so money hungry in the first place.

BearNy - you can sell or gift your CD to your mate. When you do either, you pass to him your RIGHT to listen to it. You should delete any copies you made of it.

So, for DVDs that can't be skipped, I should pay a second time for a Blu-ray?! AND buy a Blu-ray player?! And still have no guarantee that the disk hasn't been crippled with enforced advertising...? Or pay a second time to a streaming service?! I don't think so! You do know which website you're on, right?! :p

I mean, if I didn't want to watch the DVD with the adverts, I could just hire the actors to come over and re-create the film live in my living room.

It's far easier (and cheaper) to stick the legit copy on the shelf and download an "unlicensed" copy (I assume format-shifting laws mean this would be legal for the downloader...?). Or to rip the video content that you want to see, burn it to another DVD and throw the original paid-for DVD in the bin.

Hmmm... so anyone who doesn't like adverts on DVDs should stop buying commercial DVDs and support illegally operated websites to ensure that they continue to exist, so that people can download advert-free films...? Interesting idea...

What a load. Your seeming outrage at being expected to part with payment for a product is quite amusing.

The adverts on DVDs are ALWAYS at the beginning, before the menu or movie loads.

Put the disc in, leave it to load. Make a cup of tea. Pour a drink. Heat some popcorn. By the time you're done, the menu or movie will have loaded.

Nobody FORCES you to watch them. There's always something else you can do, other than froth with mock outrage.

while it is so easy to access these for free, whole albums on youtube, films on youtubeonfire

Question: How come YouTube engages in wholesale publishing of copyrighted material? Do they pay a licence fee for it?

I would mainly stream from websites such as Netflix etc, however as they are never the most up-to-date I will on occasion download a movie that I have missed in the cinema that has come out on DVD elsewhere.

I'm not much for music, but I still manage to pay a fortune through iTunes thanks to a teenage daughter! Luckily this fortune is by choice as she does ask when she wants to purchase something.

So I have the movie cache/collection of a 37 year old man, and a music collection of a 13 year old girl...
