paying for music and films

Options
while it is so easy to access these for free, whole albums on youtube, films on youtubeonfire, spotify with adverts for free, downloading torrents, how many people regularly pay for music and films?

there is also the divide between those who want to own what they pay for (traditionally vinyl, cds and dvds) and those who prefer to pay a subscription and have full access 24/7 but no ownership.

i personally can't justify paying for this media myself when there are more important things to pay for. you may ask don't i feel guilty, well not really as i don't listen/watch a lot, maybe an hour a day on average, and i pay in other ways, such as going to a concert or the cinema once in a while.

i would be interested to hear your views on this and opinions on the way forward, say in 5 years time, will anything have changed?

By your logic, if I've paid for the 'important things' (food, utilities, tax), then it's OK for me to steal my luxuries ....

I feel a little insulted by this, mainly as you're probably taking money from my pocket.

Use Youtube or Spotify, as it means the artist gets paid, but I hate people stealing income for myself and my artists

Theft is theft. Justify it any way you like to ease your conscience.

I don't know what you do for a living, but I'm sure if you lost your job due to people stealing from the company you work for, you would not dismiss theft so lightly.

Copyright infringement isn't theft. Theft only relates to material goods.

Idiomatic use of language trumps legal pedantry. Films and music are being stolen by thieves. Your petty correction belongs to a jurisprudence discussion, not a consumer forum.

I wont buy a DVD until they remove all the adverts and stupid dont steal this movie messages from the start of them.
After buying one DVD i sat there watching adverts for films due for release and then they are telling me not to steal the film. Im trying to watch the film i paid for.

Artists get paid from youtube? Are you sure? How many of the latest cinema cams can you find? I bet they dont earn anyone any money.

If you cant find them you need to search some blogsites where they tell you the search keywords to get the latest films on youtube.

Anyone seen the Simpson show on pirating movies? Its quite good. And its on youtube :)

Through the adverts you see on YT, we get about 50% of cost.

I hate adverts and would rather pay a small fee not to have them.

I am torn between spotify (or similar) and downloading from amazon mp3.

Unlike books, with music I have no worries about it being digital as long as its cd-quality.

I have never used itunes or ipods so have no ties to them.

    Any advice?

Martin (who runs this site) owns a company called Tunechecker, where you can compare the price of songs to download.

If you hate adverts, and hate paying for things, don't listen to music, as mentioned above, if you do this to one of my artists, you're stealing from me and from them.
