  • What about Icelandair from Glasgow? The stopover time in Iceland is minimal and they often seem to offer the best prices. You could then do internal flights in the US on whatever airline is cheapest (Southwest, Frontier, Allegiant, etc etc).

were going for about 4 weeks. were all 21 so we'll manage! Spend 3/4 days in each place and that will allow us to take in a lot of the main attractions in each city

    I think not:eek:

Don't forget to account for time spent travelling\getting to hotel\hostel\checking in\out.

    Also this list is unrealistic:-
Top 3 Ok for 3-4 days

Delete LA it's HUGE and a dump
    LAS Ok for 3 days
    Orlando-Are you 12? 3 days:eek: Do be serious-Delete this
Miami- 3 days on the beach:cool: need this after this itin

    NYC-Again:eek::eek:???

    chicago
    san fran

my pal has been to LA before and he recommended santa monica, just thought LA would have been easier to say.

were not 12 no haha. 21 but orlando was more for golfing as opposed to going to see micky and minnie.

NYC again was just for ease and its cheaper to get a return flight as opposed to flying glasgow > nyc then miami > glasgow for example.

    cheers for the feedback though

Just a thought: how about hiring a car from San Francisco to Los Angeles and doing either the Pacific Coast Highway or Yosemite?

Or miss out Los Angeles (which has very little to offer IMHO) and drive to Las Vegas via Death Valley.

When I went to the US I hired a car and drove between locations. The experience was amazing! Flying is boring, drive as much as you can. Fuel is cheap!

If you fancy doing it as a road trip instead of internal flights, this YouTube video might interest you. It's the mother of all road trips: New York City, Niagara Falls, Chicago, Minneapolis, Badlands NP, Mount Rushmore NM, Devils Tower NM, Yellowstone NP, Grand Teton NP, Zion NP, Bryce Canyon NP, Arches NP, Mesa Verde NP, Monument Valley, Grand Canyon NP, Las Vegas, Death Valley NP, Sequoia NP, Yosemite NP, Crater Lake NP, Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, the Pacific Coast Highway, Santa Barbara, San Diego, Joshua Tree NP, Los Angeles and Channel Islands NP. There's a map of the route they took at the end of the video. BTW their trip took two and half months so I'm not suggesting you do the same in four weeks!

Have done this form LA to SF on coast highway 1, nice easy pleasant stunning drive, a few nice places to visit or stay on the way Highway 1 is a must do :-)

But you can use the freeway if you are in a rush, but are missing out on a great drive

Very true. There are quite a few possible roads:

Ca1/Pacific Coast Highway: extremely scenic, relatively slow in places especially if construction is in progress over some stretches.

US101: inland a bit (mainly east of the coastal mountains), faster, less scenic.

I-5: further inland (through the central valley), a bit messy to get to from San Francisco, fastest, least scenic.

Ca99: even further inland, good for Sequoia National Park, reasonable fast but it goes through the towns (as a freeway, mostly).

US395: yet further inland, on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, makes sense if you've taken the Tioga Pass through Yosemite's high country or one of the other passes, and then want to head towards Death Valley and/or Las Vegas. Fast, and vast wide open scenery, but lengthy.

Not a golfer myself but probably a good option here if your IQ is over 50

How much time\money does it cost to get from Miami to NYC to then save money on the NYC flight?

If you're 21 you really shouldn't rush around USA now.

It's a HUGE country- and worth many more years of exploration (assuming they don't go to war with Russia over the Crimea )

    Take this first trip steadily

If I was 21 again  and I knew what I know now: and was Glaswegian
    4 week tour:

    NYC
    Las Vegas
San Fran (if you're gay  )

    Repeat :

    Air Ambulance home.

What about the train :-) we've just taken the Queen Elizabeth cruise ship form southampton to NYC (£400 each 8 days) then we did the overnight Amtrack train to Chicago then after 3 days in Chicago we took a second train from Chicago to LA (2 nights). The scenery was amazing - all food was included and we took our own wine so we travelled across the USA eating and drinking and loved it! The train from Chicago to LA was $300 each so all in the whole journey was good value. Just a thought :-)
