  • Hello anyone who has been kind enough to drop in.

First of all, can I say THANK YOU to Scotland for voting to stay in the UK - we love you and want you to stay. :)

I've been AWOL this week and I do apologise but I've not been sleeping well and am just knackered in the evenings. I haven't been entirely idle though. I have got most of my freelance work done and will be billing for that this week. Will probably do a bit more tomorrow morning maybe.

I have this coming week off work, my sister is coming over to stay and we are doing sisterly things. :j It's going to be fun.

Lots and lots to do over the next couple of days so that lot is coming up in the next post.
  • Jobs for Sunday:
    • Tidy up around the greenhouse
    • Weed back flower bed (most daunting job!)
    • Weed front driveway a bit
    • Cook Sunday dinner
    • Clean up around the kitchen, mop kitchen floor
    • Hoover around the place a bit
    • Pick some more raspberries, make raspberry and apple crumble :D
    • Pot up some mint and basil to grow indoors for the winter
    • Sow my lemon seeds - bit of experiment to see what happens!
    That'll do for today.
  • Busy busy busy!!!

Your lists are always so daunting to me. Hope you managed to get on tho, and slept better (and please don't feel the need to apologise for being AWOL; it's just lovely to hear from you!)

I think you're totally right about certain jobs rejecting applications when they think you're overqualified; has happened to me in the past, and DH a lot recently. I'm sure the right thing will come up tho to help with the extra - good luck with the group interview! x

  • Pah - my jobs for Sunday didn't go too well. :p

And even though I had yesterday off, I still haven't done the outstanding jobs. But I have done lots of other jobs so I'm not going to be too hard on myself. :)
  • The group interview went very well and in the greater scheme of things I would be in with a good chance. BUT the place was awash with schoolkids who also need a weekend shift and they pay minimum wage for your age-group so the schoolkids are going to be cheaper (and probably easier to boss about). So I would say the chances of me being actually offered a job are about 0.00001%. :D

I've decided that I'm on a hiding to nothing looking for Christmas work, it's too hard to get the right shift in the right place when I'm already working full-time. I shall have to be inventive and come up with new ways to raise some cash.

On the plus side, I have a week off work and the sun is shining. :j

Ta - it went well, these things are all about being confident, friendly and articulate and that's not a problem for me. We were asked to choose an item from the store and take it with us to the group interview - apparently I was the only person who knew straight away that we were going to be asked to stand up and sell the item chosen. :)

I do think that these people go to a lot of bother when they are only recruiting for a Christmas job - on the other hand it is quicker to group-interview 20 people than to interview 20 people one by one.

I am mega-over-qualified for the job but then so were lots of others. I think I and some of the other older ladies might have been invited along to the interview as an equality box-ticking exercise but such is life. :(
  • Hi P&F - I really hope they don't discount you based on having to pay you a higher minimum wage. Schoolkids usually apply for jobs at Him's place of work at Christmas. 3-4 usually don't turn up, or turn up to one or two shifts then decide it is messing with their social life and they have done enough for their CV anyway so quit... :rotfl: - so maybe on balance, your skills, plus your more mature outlook may get you the position.

There are a number of staff still on the payroll at Him's place, even now from last Xmas. They usually have zero hours contracts but get called in to cover or at busy periods, i.e. Valentines, Easter, etc. His friend was employed as a Christmas temp in 2009, and just quit to finally get a more rewarding job. Sounds like I am putting Him down there, but his hours work opposites to mine which covers childcare :)

I have my fingers crossed for you!

Aww thanks for the encouragement, Lilt. I of course consider that I would be an excellent employee and I am ultra-reliable. But we'll see what happens - I will keep you all posted. :)
  • I really hope you get it - just to have that option and bring in the extra, but either way I'm sure you'll find something to suit you, even if it isn't traditional Xmas jobs. Well done on acing the interview btw :) x
