I am a fan of Gary Hodges and have several pieces of his art work around the house. I love big mirrors and inherited a fabulous one from my grandmother which hangs above the fireplace in the lounge. In my eldest sons room he has a framed technical drawing of a rocket engine, that his dad did years ago as part of his degree. It is an amazing and very intricate piece of work and looks great. Other than that there is just paint on most of the walls, except for 2 rooms where I have used quite elaborate wallpaper to make a feature wall. Wasn't sure about doing this at first but the results are impressive.

Mirrors are great for increasing light and the feeling of space. A mirror opposite a window in a north-facing room:

Ive done this in my living room - its wesf facing, its nice to bounce the sun around, I have a large sepia canvas of flowers, goes well in the netural toned room above the dining table & a 42 inch tv, over the chimney breast.
Thats it in my living room.

Hall way, a large coat rack shelf unit thing & a photo frame with 3 openings in the mount & photos of meadow flowers (close ups) in each.

Shabbychic stuff in the kitchen. A wood sign with "this is where the magic happens", a notice board, thats like the front of a bird cage with mini wooden pegs. An inspirational word canvas, "sometimes the dreams that come true are the dreams you never knew you had", it spoke to me:D, its quite funky, each lettdr is a different colour & the background is off white. & lastly a small enamel sign that says "home made with love". If I make a cake I always say its made with love:D

Upstairs ive got some chocolate & teal art work, 3 matching & 2 different but same colours.

In my bedroom ive a small box with a little roses inside in the shape of a heart & a tv.......

In the spare room a lovely print I bought of santorni on holiday & a pretty canvas of a young ballerina tieing her shoes.

Nothing on the walls in the bathroom, dont want to damage the tiles.

We don't have wallpaper, just plain painted walls, so I like to have frames prints on the wall.

It's real mixture - stuff that we enjoy looking at.

Country scenes, French town scenes. Mediterranean scenes, beach scenes, local scenes, butterflies, penguins, cats.

Only two pictures of us - a wedding day picture, and a photo from our first ever formal night on a cruise.

    Thanks everyone for the replies!

So I bought two tin hanging things for the kitchen, http://www.therange.co.uk/coffee-plaque//the-range/fcp-product/7977 this one and another similar one. And we put them up on the walls, normally things have to sit around for at least 6 weeks first :rotfl:

My dad gave me a huge mirror as well, might put that in the dining room. Need to give the frame a sand and paint though, painted peach ATM...

DH picked out a huge metal clock at the Range as well, I'm not convinced.... I would prefer a smallet clock in the kitchen, rather than a huge clock for the dinng room.

Maybe this is the reason I don't have decor, I discuss it all with my husband :rotfl: I should just buy nice stuff and put it up myself :rotfl:
Can't think of anything smart to put here...
  • Glad to see you've made a start OP! Luckily me and my husband have very similar tastes, so it makes decorating and furnishing a lot easier! Either that, or I sneak it in, and he learns to like it!

I've just remembered something else I have in the kitchen, a framed momento from our honeymoon in Vegas. I got a lovely white frame (looked brand new) from a charity shop, and saved all the ticket stubs from the shows and attractions we went to see, along with receipts and a coaster from Gordon Ramsey's BurgR place. I then arranged them in an 'arty fashion' in the frame and it looks really cool!

In the sitting room we have:

Original painting by a musician friend of DH's who is notoriously tight, never pays his band members for gigs and then gives them one of his paintings instead (we have three!)
    New York Dolls print
    Lucky 13 print
    Mirror
One of those boxes that went in servants quarters with the little flags to show which room is calling (no idea what they're called!) Mine was liberated from one of the embassies in London when it was being refurbished.

    In the kitchen:
I'm planning a whole wall full of original watercolours but won't put them up until I have enough, I currently have three :rotfl: They are:
Watercolour of the giant waterlilies and bridge at kew done by an old workmate.
Flowers in vase original by a Brighton artist.
An original watercolour I found in a charity shop of African women carrying water jugs.
We also have the Ikea oversized black clock on the fire breast wall.

I also like the idea of filling the whole wall with different mirrors instead (the kind on chains your nan would have had over the fireplace) but they seem to be much sought after and expensive nowadays, I should have snapped them all up in the days they were ten a penny in the charity shops!

    In the bedroom:
An A1-sized poster that I made for DH for our first Christmas together which features a repeat pattern of a freakishly good black and white, grainy pic of us both dropped into letters and behind letters of a meaningful phrase (to us) with a bit of purple leopard print thrown in for good measure!
    A gilt-framed mirror.

The downstairs loo did have a mirror in the shape of the Queen's head but I decided I didn't like it and then ripped the paper when I pulled it off so the rip is covered up by a pic of Lady Gaga which was kicking around from when we closed our business venture :o
I have bought a job lot of 70s Disco 45 magazines on ebay and plan to cut them up and do a collage over that entire wall at some point.
    Make £25 a day in April £0/£750 (March £584, February £602, January £883.66)

    December £361.54, November £322.28, October £288.52, September £374.30, August £223.95, July £71.45, June £251.22, May£119.33, April £236.24, March £106.74, Feb £40.99, Jan £98.54) Total for 2017 - £2,495.10

Living room : big mirror over the fireplace. Framed map of wineries in Napa, California (bit of a joke as the map cost about ten dollars and we paid about a hundred pounds to have it framed, but we love it and it is a talking point), a canvas print of a photograph of scenery we took in Yosemite, one smaller frame with toe photos from our first holiday abroad together to Turkey (I love keeping it there to remind us how young and slim we looked!)

Hall - three large original pieces of black and white art. We buy art from http://newbloodart.com. One is a very soft focused photo of two people in silhouette walking along a beach at the water's edge, another is a very dark and moody painting of the prow of a ship in a storm, and the third is an ink drawing of two Japanese warriors. In the hall we also have (it is a big hall!) a series of photographs of a little seaside village in Norfolk that we spent an idyllic weekend at (we bought them at a craft fair), a framed 'silly' group graduation photo from my graduation, a small wedding photo, a picture of hubby's daughter as a child in a sack race, and some framed poker chips with a gaming voucher from the Aria in Vegas for the grand total of $31 :)

Husband's study - 5 guitars, a clock, a framed 100 billion Zimbabwean dollar note, and his MBA in a frame.

Kitchen - just a chalkboard and a calendar

Dining room - just a mirror

Upstairs hall - a weird thing that is just a block and sort of a criss cross of black and white...think it is a leftover from hubby's bachelor pad and probably came from Habitat. A framed Egyptian tapestry.

Stepdaughter's room - a mirror, and some pictures of her and a friend at Disneyland when they were about 8, in bright pink frames. Surprised they are still there as she is now a 17 year old goth!

My study - nothing, unless you count floor to ceiling bookshelves

Spare room one (future nursery) - nothing

Spare room two (guest room) - a framed oil painting a relative made of our house, and a couple of canvas prints of Audrey Hepburn

Our bedroom - a relatively large canvas of a wedding photo (it was a gift from my siblings and husband refused to put it up anywhere else in the house as he thinks it is weird having big self portraits up) a small canvas picture of us together not long after we first met, looking impossibly young

This has made me realise two things...firstly, our decor really has no 'theme'! And secondly, we need more art. We have a big house and loads of expanses of empty walls. I think I know what to get my husband for our first wedding anniversary...it is meant to be 'paper', after all :)
