  • You have a similar taste in art to me, I thought that too when I read your post!although I couldn't have The Scream somewhere where I saw it whenever I went upstairs :). I should get one of those picture lights to go above it, see if I can actually make people scream lol!

Had to google Chen, but it looks good :) His work is so detailed, I'm still finding things I didn't know was on there years later! An artist friend came in once and was immediately drawn to them, he loved them.

Your husband sounds very talented. :) My husband bought some oils and canvases once, let's just say, he didn't get very far, but he does do an awesome Jackson Pollock! :rotfl:

i don't have much adorning any of my walls - one box canvas on one wall in the living room and a large framed mirror over the mantlepiece.

one framed photo of my daughter in the dining room.

kitchen - nothing (its all tiled). I do have half a dozen fridge magnets - do they count?

3 large framed prints in the hall - all beach/seaside themed, one downstairs, one going up the stairs, and one upstairs.

bathroom - one mirror and painted shelves.

spare bedroom - nothing (its a small boxroom)

our bedroom - framed photo of me as a baby, 2 framed prints of the desert.

daughter's bedroom - white painted shelves, large framed mirror over her desk, pinboard with her favourite label tags on it - oh and an Alton Towers ride photo is on her wall at the moment too.

Most of my prints came from Ikea (the frames too as I recall) - I usually bought them and hung them to finish a room once I'd decorated. I haven't bought anything new, and don't think I will be, for ages now.

Nothing on my walls except in the living room where we have a chiming pendulum clock over the fireplace. :)

I've got all sorts of odds and ends, the only rule is that I have to love them :) So over the TV we have a framed print of Volcanoes national park in Hawaii, one wall has a large mirror in a black frame, another has two framed prints of whales by a Canadian artist that we picked up in Canada. I do also have photos, generally of DH and / or I on holiday or doing something special. They bring back great memories :) Upstairs we have two framed papyrus thingies the inlaws brought us back from Egypt, a framed Chinese caligraphy original that was a wedding gift and a Dali print we got at his hometown in Spain. in the kitchen we have various tin beer signs from breweries we love / have visited, two American highway signs and a tiki bar sign from Honolulu. So a strong travel theme! It's definitely not a show house, it's very personal and I love it x

I think your only rule about having to love them is wonderful. And I love be homes that are personal and feel something of their occupants. Its much lovelier, IMO, than 'perfect' taste that's soulless. It a strange way its also far more.....enjoyable to the eye, to me anyway, than hotel or advert perfection. :).

DH and I have spent a lot of time explaining to builders, trades, architects etc that perfect isn't what we want in the home we're overhauling, and in parts restoring, but neither is fake. Its a hard balance. Its lovely to se other's styles, things i wouldn't choose but which speak strongly of our friends' likes in their homes too. It feels instantly relaxing and pleasing.

We have some mirrors and I have a few favourite prints/posters but mostly our walls are taken up with DH's hobby. He collects antiquarian maps and prints. There are loads of them, a quick look around and I can count 7 in just the (small) study I'm in now.:(
  • I have a mirror in the living room, a huge black and white Manhattan canvas in the bedroom and that's it! I'm hopeless at accessorising and that extends to clothes too. I've got tons of stuff to accessorise with but nothing complements anything else. Bright block colours for me - my living room walls are bright turquoise!

I just walked round my wee house out of interest and counted 44 assorted picture inc a couple of mirrors, wooden masks from my grandfathers travels in the 50s and excuding a few shabby chic hearts etc which are mostly in the bedroom or kitchen. I love stuff on the walls. My neighbour with the identical house has nothing on the walls and it feels austere and unfinished to me. I also love lamps while she uses the overhead light and this makes me feel the same way. I think I am a "cosy house' person!!! I have about 10 bits waiting to go up on the walls. I have been buying a few original pieces from e bay (very cheaply) and using reused frames. Again, like others have said, only if I love the piece! I was in Avoca a while back and loved the original bird paintings but at over £100 were well out of my price range. Using Asda wooden frames and ebay auctions I put together a gorgeous pair for less than £25!!

Our house is pretty big, but we are really running out of wall space and now have to move things around to fit in new stuff. Fortunately every single room has white walls (apart from the black downstairs loo), so that makes it much easier to switch things.

Absolutely everything is very personal to us, which means that it is far from looking sterile. We visit Africa most years, so that is a very definite theme!

    So we have .....
Framed antique Zulu beadwork, assorted African masks, 2 ceramic plaques from Sicily, photo prints of redwood trees, a pastel of a honey badger, a 5 ft painting of Joe Strummer (the Clash), embroidered picture of Xhosa women, art nouveau pewter mirror, chrome rhino head, miniature painting of a tiger done on bone, assorted Japanese prints and masks (in bedroom with proper Japanese futon), a commissioned drawing of RaaRaa the Noisy Lion (in toddler's room), a framed needlepoint of African figures (done by me), a Zulu hat, a Masai beaded wedding necklace ...... a life-size cut-out of Elvis ..... and lots more wildlife pictures and photos, animal skulls and an elephant's rib.

Off to South Africa in 2 weeks and I have already commissioned a bronze sculpture of a dung beetle which we will be collecting. Doubtlessly some more stuff will find its way into our cases too!

It's lovely looking at things which bring back happy memories! The previous owners of our house mainly had generic, bland artwork up and it really didn't look like a home at all. Now it is totally ours!
