........Ok ..I am ready for all the flak .......
£50 would buy a secondhand machine on eBay several generations newer. Looking at http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php a 2.4GHz celleron has a Passmark of 226 and the first £50 delivered machine on eBay I found sports an Intel Core 2 E7400 which has a passmark of 1756. That one has no opsys but I'm pretty sure it should be possible to find one that does which will vastly exceed any upgraded version of this, probably nearly 10 year old, doorstop. Come to that you could probably get a better one through freegle.0 -
That's quite an old CPU there.
32bit only processor. even upgrading ram your not going to seem much of a performance increase.
I don't even think upgrading to SSD (if that's even possible on the board of this type socket) will be possible.
also changing to a different cpu require another type of chipset drivers, and boot up issues can arise from doing this if the board don't support that chipset.
personally if you were to have a limited budget, a mother board bundle may be your best option and reuse the case you have. although you may want to check you power supply has the correct pin and wattage rating for the setup.
then in time you can upgrade on that instead of fighting a losing battle with upgrading this one.0 -

Agree. That mobo probably only have IDE.atrixblue.-MFR-. wrote: »also changing to a different cpu require another type of chipset drivers, and boot up issues can arise from doing this if the board don't support that chipset.

I would guess existing HDD with IDE. modern mobo no support.
existing RAM probably DDR. It is now DDR3
Existing PSU likely to be 20 pin. It is 24 now.
So, new machine is the way to go.0 -
If it is running slowly, (you haven't said), reinstall windows/remove the bloat, and it won't be slow anymore, unless you are attempting something graphically intensive. The ram and processor are fine.

Thank you all for your helpfull advice. In fact, the machine isn't running that slowly. OK....I'll come clean. The last couple of days I tried mining one of those crypto currencies which I was actually able to do using this machine. But everytime I loaded the mining programme, the computer just completely froze if I tried to do anything else. I was told that Celeron CPU wasn't up to it especially the coin which I was mining ie Maxcoin.0

Could you give an example of one of those on ebay? Even if I don't use it for 'mining', it is time to upgrade. I'm not in a position to buy a new one now.0 -
I'll probably get shot down in flames for this, but what about overclocking the CPU? That will give free performance. Of course that depends on your motherboard and its capabilities.
The free version of HWiNFO will tell you the make and model number of your motherboard - post that information here.0 -
Motherboard Chipset: SiS 661MX/FX/GX + 964
Motherboard Slots: 4xPCI, 1xAGP v3.50 -
Habbakuk - yep, much as I love upgrading computers, it can be a waste of time, depending on the cost of replacement. Fortunately for your, and unfortunately for this computer, second hand desktops depreciate seriously, so as above, it'll be very cheap for you to replace with something far better. Even Core 2 Duo desktops will be far better, and very cheap (but not really that fast these days). Best thing to do with eBay, is look for something more local, that you can pick up, and inspect, this will save expensive postage on a heavy cheap item. Gumtree too. If you want us to recommend some give us a postcode near your home, or even just your town, and we can have a look at what's around you.
You can then wipe the Celeron and set it up again just to sit there and mine if you like...
Just saw your post abive - having an AGP slot marks this thing out as ancient, and not really worth upgrading, confirming the advice above.0 -
Thanks almillar. My 'town' would be Swansea.0
