In my desktop computer I currently have an Intel Celeron 2.40 GHz. I understand this is pretty slow. I would like to upgrade it. What type of CPU can I upgrade it to? I don't think it's a difficult think to manage technically as I have put a new fan in my computer and the CPU came away easily enough. But I'm not too sure at all about compatability. Any help much appreciated.

That's a pretty old CPU if you upgrade if the rest of your PC is old you won't see any benefit as the system/mobo etc won't be able to perform better.
Can you post your PC specs?Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 0650 -
You need to post exactly what type of Celeron it is, there are many different Celeron processors Intel have produced at 2.4Ghz over the years.

That's all it says under System properties is Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.40GHz. Not sure what else to find or where to look? Thanks.0

This software will tell you exactly which one it is:

It sounds like it might be a pretty old one as the poster above thought.

In my experience, although CPUs can be upgraded, it's an expensive option for not-a-great-deal of extra performance.
How much memory (RAM) do you have? It can sometimes be cost-effective to upgrade the RAM if you don't have much.
If you want to upgrade to get better gaming performance, maybe a new graphics card would help...?
Otherwise, it would probably be better to save up and get a new motherboard & CPU at the same time... which may then require a better case, bigger power supply, different memory, etc., etc.
But in the long term, I've found major upgrades every ~7 years to be more cost-effective than just CPU or memory upgrades. My >5 year old Core i7 with 6GB RAM still flies along. :-)0 -
I agree with your advice in general although I'm thinking this might be an old Pentium 4 based Celeron (as there isn't a model number) in which case an upgrade would likely cost very little.

It's an Intel Celeron 320
Socket 478 mPGA
I tried to do a screen print shot but it had too many charachters.0 -
I say it every time ..and I will get moaned at ..
Just buy an SSD drive and swap it for the hard drive ..the difference is beyond belief and if you do buy a new machine the SSD goes into that.
The reason this is now possible is that over the last couple of years the price has dropped like a stone.

something like this.
And unless you have stuck an SSD in your machine ..you really won't get it ..it is not like a Ram upgrade or a disk clean
read some of the reviews on the amazon link ..you will get an idea .
........Ok ..I am ready for all the flak .......0 -

What operating system are you running?
How much RAM is there?
How much free disk space?1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?0
