Ive been sacked twice, once for gross misconduct which was actually the result of an 18 months campaign against me by junior staff who wanted my job, my bosses were a (useless) board of trustees. I complained about my working conditions and rather than deal with them, they dismissed me

Just made up all this untrue stuff about me, suspended me when I was off sick with stress, disciplined me for going into grievance and then sacked me

I was also sacked by a boss last year who was just sack happy. I was only working part time, wasnt the only person who she dismissed.

In the first instance, I went to new employers, I was honest. I didnt ask my ex employers for a reference, theyd have put the boot in anyway. I had work 6 weeks later, also went back to uni

Lots of people get sacked and find other work, honesty is the best policy really.

And have not told the companies why they are no longer at the company. No mentions of the GM yet.
That's true but there are several hurdles to get over in most application processes - application, sift, aptitude tests, interviews etc. They have got over the first few and have at least one more than those without GM but are nevertheless getting some way in the process.

A lot of people with a GM would not get past the sift process.
So if the OP has a better CV they may have got the interview over someone else who has no GM over their head. I wouldn't be happy as an interviewer if I had turned someone down.

There are many companies who use the excuse of gross misconduct as a way to get rid of people without having to pay them notice pay.

Just because someone has been dismissed for gross misconduct doesnt mean theyve done anything that is gross misconduct.

I turned up at a job about 18 months ago to get a letter saying come into work tomorrow (without representation) to basically be dismissed. I hadnt done anything.

I fought it, they still sacked me in the end, but they knew fine well I hadnt done anything that was gross or even misconduct, my face just didnt fit and I wasnt the first person the employer had done it to.

Sometimes people do make mistakes, its still possible for them to find work or it should be. Unless someone has done something really horrendous I dont think people should be written off.
  • Thank you Pauline!! You don't know how reassuring it feels to know other people have got through this.

Extremely nervous about tomorrow's interview and how they will react but I know I need to apply for anything and everything to have a chance if getting back into work.

But the OP isn't denying it though.

That being the case, with a large field of applicants the employer would likely have several other suitable candidates. And of course they accept, even expect the selection process to highlight suitable and non suitable candidates. That's why they have selection processes. Often if there's not much in applicants at sift they'll include those in the same ball park rather than be rigid on numbers. In any event if the employer felt they'd missed a suitable applicant there's nothing stopping them contacting the applicant for an interview after all.

    Which is to their credit.

Just a hunch, if I were a betting person I'd say they'd be back in work within the next 6 months.

You will learn by your mistake. Some people read all terms and conditions in everything to be on the safe side. Good luck
