Finding a job following dismissal for gross misconduct

  • If they are not going to say on your reference why you left then dont say you have been sacked. Say you got made redundant or something like that.
I've been sacked and I've been to interviews and told them but I'll tell you this a lot do not want to know. When an employer has over 100 people for a job why would they choose someone who has been fired over someone who hasnt?
I got work through someone I know who owns his own buisness not through applying for a job and bearing all. All the other people I know who have also been sacked have not disclosed in order to get another job.
Even the Jobcentre and my G.P said dont tell a new employer. Good luck with it, whatever you choose to do.
  • I would be honest with them and try to illustrate how you have learned from your mistake.

I know someone who was dismissed for a similar thing many years ago, he was able to get another job but not in the same field.

I wish you well and hope you get a job soon.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton
  • Thanks Seven.

I don't want to lie re what happened as I couldn't live with the guilt or fear of being found out and being sacked again!!

Has anyone else been in this position? Anyone that can offer some advice?

I really have been in a pit of despair since this happened

I know things appear bleak and you may feel lost and panic but your situation will improve. You will get that break and get back into work.

    Try and be positive.

  • I'm trying Ohreally but it's so hard to be positive just now. I know I've messed up big style and some days it feels impossible to go on.....

I just want to feel 'normal' again :-(((

To echo what Lakes17 said, disciplinary sanctions should be fair and proportionate. I'd get an appeal lodged immediately - whats the worst that happens, they uphold the original decision.

Next job, join a union, this has nothing to do with whether the company "has a union", you have a right to join.

Sorry to hear what happened to you Scarlet.

When you got temp jobs etc. were you honest with recruiter/interviewer re reason for losing job?

I wake up every morning at moment feeling sick with worry :-((

All the agencies were sympathetic towards me. I had to laugh about 9-10 months after my dismissal that the place closed down 4 months time.

    It was for a bank.

I was going to be honest...I've got 2 interviews next week.

Best thing to do - remember your time of 4 years will count an awful lot right now so convey the positivity of that as much you can, employers do like 'real' people

    Stay strong, hugs xxx
