I am going to be honest bugslet....I know it's not going to be easy

i really think that's the best decision, it makes you look honest.

Completely different, but I had a driver apply that had turned a trailer over and he said that from the outset. I'd rather know and in that case my opinion would be that he'd never turn a trailer over again.

good luck and don't forget that whilst you are thinking of just the GM, an interviewer should look at the fact that you had worked there for a number of years and had two promotions, there's a lot of good outweighing one bad!

Sorry to hear of your plight Shazza122, last year I was in a similar position to you. Lost my previous job due to GM, for an offence more serious than what you did!

I am very lucky indeed as I was working two jobs at the time, so I could fall back on my 2nd job as well as use it for a references. I also then found another job in retail, so was working two jobs again. Then I applied for a job I really wanted, and because I had the 2 references from the retail jobs I was able to blank out my history with the employer where I got dismissed. I thank my lucky stars though as I would have been in a sticky situation had I not had another job to fall back on.

I do hope you manage to get another job Shazza122, fingers crossed for you. :) Also I agree in your case being honest is the best thing, as what you did to get GM was not the crime of the century so I am sure an employer will still consider you if you mention it from the outset and that you have learnt from your mistakes.
  • Hi All,

Well had interview and I was surprisingly calm...I was totally honest with them and the HR woman actually said 'we all make mistakes'. She may have just been nice but it made me feel a bit better. Not very positive about getting it tho as they also seemed to think I was over qualified :-(
  • Any advice on how to approach this issue with agencies/temp recruitment? Should I just explain to them the situation?
  • Nice to read! step in the right direction though Shazza building up that confidence again, fingers crossed and always plenty more jobs in the sea! xx

Do that if it makes you feel better, but expect recruitment consultants to not make much an effort to help you. While employers say honesty is the best approach they will reject you. Nobody wants to admit being shallow, admitting they are judging your past mistake. They'll just say there's a better candidate or you're over-qualified to make you feel better.

As an employer of 20 people, I wouldn't rule it out, depending on the circumstances of the GM. I'm not sure how I'd view the OPs GM based on what I've read, I'd probably want to talk to them more and what the job entailed.

If there are two candidates, the slightly more qualified one has a gross misconduct past, your subconscious mind would try to perceive the other candidate in better light.

It's like two women being rude to someone. You're more likely to go against the ugly woman, but try to make excuses or justify the actions of the better looking one. It happens, and there are TV programmes documenting this fact.

I got temporary work with an agency the same year I was sacked, they didnt give a hoot. I wasnt rejected from jobs.

As I said in previous posts I had work within 6 weeks of being sacked, sessional work, agency work during the summer and another full time job by the end of the year (I was sacked in the May).

When people are giving out advice I think its very important to remember that some employers will appreciate a worker being honest and if they are the best person for the job give them the job.

Really dont think giving advice saying an employer will do this or will do that is helpful at all, it will very much depend on the employer.

Oh yeah because tv programs are always full of facts.
  • Thanks Pauline.

I've got to call an agency this afternoon after I sent in my CV and hate telling them I was dismissed!! But honesty is best policy.

Can I also ask if I've sent my CV to some agencies and they've not got back should I go in and see them personally with another CV?
