Finding a job following dismissal for gross misconduct

  • I hope so Bugslet cos every day is a struggle at the moment
  • There but for the grace of God go the rest of us.

I know that in the dim and distant past during a shopping trip some 16 years ago, my wife spotted some furniture we just had to have. We didn't have enough money in our current account, we didn't have any credit cards, but I did have a dinners club card from work.

The way the 'expences' system worked, you got "your" bill, to your home address, filled in an expences form, attached receipts and posted them to the finance deptment in the post. Then hopefully the money was refunded to your own account before the Direct Debit for the full amount on the bill came out. The finance dept never usually saw the Bill, unless you had lost a receipt and sent them the bill to prove the expence.
So all I had to do was transfer the money to my own current account and they'd NEVER know.
Given that sometimes they'd pay your expences after the money had been taken from your account, (once leaving me overdrawn by £2K for 4 days) I considered it to be morally acceptable to use the card occasionally for personal use.

And I think that a dismissal in such circumstances is pretty harsh. A warning shot across the bows, yes, but sacking is inappropriate in my very humble oppinion. I never actually read the T&C's to be honest. Which I would definately do today (honestly I might)

Note that these days, I have a couple of credit cards of my own, because at the time, doing lots of foreign work based travel, using diners club, it was only going to be a matter of time, before some hotel wouldn't take it, and I wanted a back up.
  • Sorry very down today just can't see a way through this....

Shazza, saying this with much love to you, but it's happened, it's not great, but there are things to go forward with and when you go for interviews, you need to keep being positive for your own sanity and because your internal feelings come across in an interview.

I get a potential employee and I look at a number of things, but a major selection point is, could I work with this person and how do they come across to my customers.

So put your big girl kickers on and get out there, you worked there for years, got promotions and you made one screw up. ( Personally I agree with Prothet of Doom, it does seem a bit harsh if everything else was hunkydory, but policy is policy). Wallowing will do you no good!

That was my attempt at a motivational kick up the bum!
  • Lol thanks Bugs....I am fine when I'm talking to someone about it or at an interview etc. and I know I comes cross confidently but it's when I'm home alone and I start worrying about how we will pay bills etc. I start to stress and panic.

Yup I do need a kick up the bum sometimes :-)
  • Can I ask another couple of questions of everyone?

If I'm going for a job and applying through an agency should I be honest with the agency? Or should I just wait until I get to interview stage? Secondly I've sent my CV to a few agencies on spec...if they don't get back to me should I chase them?

I don't deal with agencies, so I'll let someone else answer those.

In the meantime get out for a walk if the weather is nice, really it will make you feel a bit better and a bit more positive. :D
  • I will Bugs thank you
  • Good luck OP. ((Hugs))

Have you registered the appeal yet?

Keep in mind there's probably just as good a chance of getting a job by appealing as applying for new one with GM. Plus if you get some form of reinstatement you get GM off your record.

Im sure there'd be plenty on here willing to contribute points and ideas on how to best present your appeal.
