OK, I see my thread is back at the top of the forum listing so I might as well make one final reply. This is for all of you who feel the need to sneer at someone (re train driver and chain saw) just for the sake of it.
On Friday night the train journey between Southampton and Weymouth was particularly difficult. The train travelled at a snail’s pace and made numerous stops. There was an instance when the train stopped and the guard stated on the PA system something like, “There’s a tree down on the line in front of us. The driver will shortly be going out with a saw to clear the tree.” (No, he didn’t stipulate a chainsaw - just an assumption I made) A few minutes later he said, “The electricity will be going off to allow the driver to clear the tree”. Then the electricity went off and the lights in the train dimmed. A few minutes later the guard said, “The driver is making good progress with clearing the tree”. (And yes, before anyone says, the PA system was still working even though the electricity was off). Finally he said, “The driver has been successful in clearing the tree and as soon as the electricity comes back on we’ll start moving again.” After a further few minutes the electricity came back on and the train started moving again. The driver had to remove a tree from the line three times whilst I was on board., it might even have happened again after I got off the train - I don’t know.
I also don’t know what would have happened if an obstruction had been too difficult for the driver to cope with, whether they would have sent out a team to help remove the blockage or if they would have had to get all the passengers to leave the train. Luckily this situation didn’t arise.
I expect someone will make the comment of “Oh, yeah sure they turned the electricity off just for that train. What about the effect that would have had on all the other trains?” As far as I’m aware there were no other trains running on that line. All other trains had been cancelled. This was the only train and the sole focus was on getting this train through to its final destination.
As for my vent about the Premier Inn, I’ve taken on board everyone’s comments and despite all the ‘should haves, would haves, could haves’ the bottom line is that I was someone in distress in abnormal circumstances and needed some compassionate help which I didn’t get.
I realize that the’ lack of kindness’ of the PI staff was due to inconsiderateness whereas the unkindness of some of you posters is through sheer maliciousness. You must lead some very sad lives so I’m glad that this thread has provided you with so much entertainment.0 -

The abnormal circumstances were well known before you travelled, yet you still travelled and took no action to protect yourself.0

OP, you've still to tell us what your plans would have been had everything been on time.0

Dreadful behaviour by Premier Inn. Clearly, they should always keep a room vacant in case a distraught woman turns up at 3am.0

Maybe the OP could sell the idea of a train driver with a chainsaw as a character for a new horror film, maybe get George A Romero would direct it.0 -
So, even in the best case scenario, you would have arrived in town at 8:10... With no room booked anywhere? That's just dumb, and as a lone female traveller, potentially dangerous.
You'd just stumbled into town with a cavalier "I'll find a room when I get there!" approach?
No one else's problem but yours. And everyone knew what the weather forecast was over those few days.Because it's fun to have money!
