Is that man, Professor Henry Brubaker, serious?
“Whether it’s British, Scottish, Ukrainian, Russian or South Sudanese, nationalism is the best way to make everyone rich, safe and happy."
Ukraine???? safe, happy........0 -
He is a professor and from the Institute for Studies, so he must be serious.0

Extreme? Who says that? Nobody I have read.
For those who have missed the point by a few miles, the daily mash is a parody site.I'm totally depressed at the hammering were getting by big national companies saying ,moving to England if Yes vote
It is a fact of life that companies choose where to be based and where to do business. There are an awful lot of factors that contribute to that decision.
It is no reflection on the Scottish people that these companies are preparing contingency plans, it is a reflection on the business risks associated with an independent Scotland. Companies are legally required to report on these risks - otherwise I suspect most of them would stay quiet and keep the preparations under wraps.
As a Scot, I can't say I feel "hammered" or "attacked" although I do think that (particularly for financial services) the risks are a bit of a statement-of-the-bleedin-obvious. But perhaps not obvious to everyone.
There is certainly a core Yes vote that don't give a damn. There are probably also some Yes voters who really believed that it would all be OK and nothing like this would happen. Now the foundations of that belief are being shaken.0 -
It's currently possible to make a guaranteed profit by betting both No (William Hill 1/4) and Yes (Betfair 21/5). No doubt someone could work out the cost of tying up ones capital for 200 or so days.0

Assuming WH will let you put on £1,000 (which they won't), and assuming your Betfair commission rate on day of settlement is 5% (which it may not be), and assuming that you lay the WH bet (because there isn't enough money at BF to back for the £1,000), you will end up with a profit of £6.36 (or £7.89 if you underlay).
Does not look like a good "investment".0 -

Betting was so much simpler in my day.0
