I have never understood the whole thing of the scottish cheering on for foreign teams to beat England (or the reverse if it happens- haven't seen it yet).

it doesn't happen, as we're not bitter about our neighbours;):A

So Scottish MP's and MSP's can ask questions of the EU pertaining to the criteria for membership, it doesn't need the Government to ask the questions.

I don't know if that's ever been in doubt. What I'm not sure about is whether they have to answer.

    There are.

And there is at least one NATO member, probably two, that has a veto over Scotland joining and that benefits from locating nuclear weapons in Scotland.

Most of the things the SNP plan to deliver post-Yes depend on agreement of a number of other countries. Each has their own agenda and will exploit the opportunity to progress their own ideas. The question that they ask on any of these topics won't be "is it right and proper that iScotland does X" and will be "what can we get out of this" - that's how international politics works...

With no proven history in intelligence/security, NATO membership might even be denied until the members are happy to grant security clearances to iScotland officials. COSMIC TOP SECRET and other clearances are not given lightly.

    Fine.
Maybe Scotland will be better neutral like the Republic of Ireland.

But lets be honest, NATO need Scotland as their northern flank

You seem to have marked off quite a bit of international waters (hint - all of the EEZ except for the 12 nmi territorial waters is international waters).

It probably is advantageous for NATO to accept iScotland. But there will be more than one factor to consider and the balance of that may not be what Scotland wants. It isn't all about "Stop the Ruskies" any more. They are in the Partnership for Peace, after all :p

Would iScotland get Rockall? I suppose so.

I never said NATO wouldn't want Scotland (they very well might) but they'd have to join as their membership would cease as soon as they left the Union. Legally.

And yes claiming more than their legal entitlement in the map above.

  • I can shift my savings in Scottish based funds quite readily (but would be sad to wave bye-bye to Aberdeen Asian Smaller), but my shares in private casks of Bruichladdich at the distillery might be less, er, liquid I think ?

(but would be sad to wave bye-bye to Aberdeen Asian Smaller)

The interesting question is what will Aberdeen Asset Management (and the other 94,000 jobs in the sector) do if iScotland doesn't get a currency union?

If we went for "Sterlingisation" then there would be no LOLR which might rather put people off the Scottish finance industry.

If we went for a new free-float currency then confidence in the likes of AAM would depend on confidence in the Scottish economy (smaller and more volatile as it will be).

Bruichladdich is quite liquid, I can assure you. hic.

edit to add: "the Scottish banking sector would be oversized, with assets totalling around 1250 per cent of Scotland’s GDP." Awesome. That'll be really secure and stable.

It works fine for Luxembourg, whose banking assets are 16x the size of their GDP.

GGS is quite correct. This video dispels the myth of Scotland having to join the euro quite thoroughly.

If anybody posts this myth again we can post this link again.

I think you need to dump this divorce metaphor. It has stopped working.

if it's on youtube it must be right!
