Interesting, why don't they like STV I wonder, have you asked?

Its coming to sat again in April.
  • I thought STV was the default ITV region for Scottish Sky viewers ?
Regardless, I don't have the problem because I don't alternate between the TV's Freeview tuner and Sky.
Try the "techie" forum for other suggestions,

It is, however it is not part of the ITV network. It just shows ITV programmes.

Just as a matter of interest, do you in England get STV on channel 103? If not why are some people surprised that in Scotland we don't get ITV on channel 103?

I have a Sony Bravia 32 in TV and recently connected a Sky HD+ box via HDMI and have found that the sound level is much lower when watching Sky via HDMI compared to watching via the HD tuner on the TV.

I have to watch STV HD and STV + on the digital tuner as this is not on Sky so if I switch to TV input from Sky I am deafened when changing channel, also the sound the TV makes when first switching on is very loud because of the high volume setting while watching Sky.

Any suggestions or do I just have to suffer it? :(

Its not a problem with your equipment. Its a problem with sound compression, not only on different platforms, but also on different TV channels on the same platform too.

You're just going to have to live with it.

ITV have the licence to broadcast in England and Wales, with all their regions. STV have the licence for Scotland and UTV (owned by STV) have the licence for Northern Ireland. STV have really dragged their feet with getting the HD channels along, and satellite is the last place they're getting around to. UTVHD only launched a few months ago. ITV aren't allowed to broadcast in Scotland or NI, and it was very difficult to find, and impossible to record from, ITV HD.
This problem is going away but that's the background AFAIK.

Sign of things to come if King Salmon comes to power, as the Scottish infrastructure crumbles.
    Only joking of course.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

I have been through every sound setting I can find on both the TV and Sky box but cannot find any setting that will let me increase the volume from the Sky box compared to the volume of the TV or any setting that will let me have a lower sound level on the TV sound.

If I am watching a programme via the TV tuner the sound volume level is 16, but when I watch via HDMI I have to turn the sound level up to 36, more than double.

Even my next door neighbour hears the ding of my TV being switched on at that sound level.

I cannot find a setting that switches that off either.

Any suggestions or do I just have to suffer it? :(

On the TV try going to Options then selecting Sound then Volume Offset (it's hidden out of sight right at the bottom of the menu) and reduce it to the minimum (-5 or -6).

That should reduce the volume of the TV to somewhere much nearer that of the SkyHD box.

It's not brilliant as the range available is not quite wide enough but and at least there's not such a big difference between the two when switching inputs and avoids deafening your neighbours. :D

If youravinalarrrf is right - that's the exact setting you need to change on your TV. And be grateful that it has that setting.

I was wondering if there were any hidden settings, evidently not.

There is, right at the bottom, hidden from view.

    TV -5

    HDMI +5

    Thanks youravinalarrrf
