Sony Bravia sound and Sky HD+

I have a Sony Bravia 32 in TV and recently connected a Sky HD+ box via HDMI and have found that the sound level is much lower when watching Sky via HDMI compared to watching via the HD tuner on the TV.


I have to watch STV HD and STV + on the digital tuner as this is not on Sky so if I switch to TV input from Sky I am deafened when changing channel, also the sound the TV makes when first switching on is very loud because of the high volume setting while watching Sky.


I have been through every sound setting I can find on both the TV and Sky box but cannot find any setting that will let me increase the volume from the Sky box compared to the volume of the TV or any setting that will let me have a lower sound level on the TV sound.


If I am watching a programme via the TV tuner the sound volume level is 16, but when I watch via HDMI I have to turn the sound level up to 36, more than double.


Even my next door neighbour hears the ding of my TV being switched on at that sound level. :eek:

I cannot find a setting that switches that off either.

Any suggestions or do I just have to suffer it?

Go to "Settings" on the digibox and select "sound" set the audio output to "stereo" and (this is the key bit) change HDMI to "normal". I'll be very surprised if this doesn't cure your problem.

How do you access 'settings' please, as I can't find a settings button on the remote?
We have been having a similar problem to the OP, in that we need to increase the volume when using the Sky box, resulting in the tv volume being too high , when the box is switched to standby.

Press "Services" on the remote and then scroll along the various "options" icons at the top of the screen. As Penryhn says, the icon is a spanner and selecting this will give you access to "picture" "sound" etc.

If you still have a SCART cable (and you are using HDMI) remove the SCART as it is redundant.

why are you still watching via that if you have HDMI

I'm not, I used SCART until I got a HDMI cable, I got the Sky HD+ box from a friend but did not get an HDMI cable.

In your first post you made reference to watching Sky both via HDMI AND SCART.
If you're still watching via SCART the HDMI settings are irrelevant...

But not at the same time.

I watched via SCART on my old Sky + box


I never posted that I was doing it now, I only included the remark about SCART being the same sound level as the TV for clarity perhaps I should remove all reference to SCART to avoid confusing forum readers which I shall do now.

Yes, see my original post.

I was wondering if there were any hidden settings, evidently not.

I suppose I will just have to live with it.

I too find the sound levels very different between Sky and the freeview aerial. Not only volume but clarity and I have some difficulty hearing and understanding some of the voices. A show like The Wire becomes unwatchable.
I've found that a soundbar has worked well in allowing a reasonable volume on both and enabling me to switch the subtitles off.
