I actually think it is snobbery. Because they may have a newer car they look down at me. Bragging almost.

I thought this was a money saving forum. The car I own is mine and no finance.

    It's all I could afford.

No. Its not. Its people trying to manage your perceptions of what you are entitled to when you buy a 13 year old car for probably 5% of the price of a new one.

I never once said I expected a perfect car nor did I say it should be void of faults. I was asking a question is all.

I accept it will have issues and I am having repairs done next week on it.

Older cheaper cars are basically only for private sellers then. Why would any dealer get involved or want the grief

Because they will give you 50p for your £500 car, Sell it to someone for £900 and when someone buys it and finds a fault they laugh and say thats nice. Bye.

Not worth the hassle for 400 quid. I guess if you're dealing in £500 quid cars though you need the money

No, and no one said you did.

You asked about the SOGA and the faults you had. And people responded saying this was probably "normal" for a 13 year old car, therefore it is unlikely you would have redress with the trader.

And no one is being a snob.

    Yes, exactly.

Far too much hassle from buyers who think £500 buys them a perfect car.

My "favourite" was a couple of years ago i sold a cheapie 01 Clio for £600. Decent enough wee car, a bit denty, but long MOT and drove well. High miles at 130,000 though.

4 weeks later the buyer was on the phone - radiator was leaking - "my baby daughter could have been killed in this car". Hows that then? "well if it had broken down somewhere remote, at night, who knows what might have happened!".

Demanded £795 back as that was the advertised price of the car, even though i sold it for £600.

And apparently i was a con man because i'd advertised her trade in at £500 more than i gave her for it - neglecting the fact it needed £250 of work for MOT and a £50 valet.

She then phoned trading standards who said she should try to negotiate on getting a refund if she wasnt happy with the car, so she "opened" negotiations saying she wanted £1,000 back - £795 which was the price she didnt pay, then a further £200 because i made "so much profit" on her trade in.

    Nutter.
  • Lets set aside the fact this is 13 year old car for a second and focus on the issue at hand.

the the issue with the speedo is could be two things the odometer, or the gearbox cable sensor maybe loose.

the engine judder issue is identical to what I have just gone through with my brothers car same year 1.4 engine, it was infact 2 HT leads that were past their use, £28.99 for 10mm core leads form local factors or £18.00 for a 8mm core leads.

coil pack had issues a few months ago where I change this for him aswell, that had water ingress as the seal on the bottom of the coilpack had shrunk back and allowed water splash in.

the trader was wrong to put sold as seen on the invoice, but for the sake of a few minor issues, I would repair these yourself and save the heartache and stress of going down legal routes to try and get this trader to obligate the repairs.

if you want to and to get a feel of how things will go is to call them and open a line of negotiation asking for reapairs to be done, of part contribution towards repairs and be happy with that, but I suspect that he will laugh you off. do you really have the time and added stress to go down legal routes.

OP, this is a very, very common problem on Focus. Google Vehicle Speed Sensor and see how quick and easy it is to fix.
If you find a speedo cable incidentally, I'd love to see it.

lol, I thought I had typed, road speed sensor oops.

1 thing to remember if you are to do this road speed sensor yourself, is DO NOT break that retaining pin holding it in I did on a 2004 model 1.6 zetec se a 15 min job turned in to hard work and cut knuckles it was well seized in there, and in the end it was drilled out, then I had to tap some threads into the pin hole and use a grub screw as a replacement retaining pin, it worked well and cost me nothing as I had a few of those laying in box in my tool chest. Now I know to put a load of wd40 and leave it over night to soak in and it usually popes out with a good set of maul grips and a steady twist and pull motion.
