I actually think it is snobbery. Because they may have a newer car they look down at me. Bragging almost.

I thought this was a money saving forum. The car I own is mine and no finance.

    It's all I could afford.

Why all the snobbery about 13 year old cars? Both mine are 1997 vintage, the Disco is a workhorse that needs fettling all the time but the MX5 is immaculate and would put a lot of newer cars to shame.

It's not so much that people are snobs for old cars - but it gets tiresome with all these threads from people who have bought bangers and expect it to be problem free, then you get the members who seem to think SOGA covers old used cars equally to a brand new car, then to conclude it all the wrong information flying about has to e corrected as not to mislead people who come across this thread in the future.

If you're buying a used car in ops price range then most people do so on the understanding if it outlasts its MOT you've done well.

Not really. Alot of cars around my age are still going strong. Again it is snobbery. If it's had a good and good service which mine has had then i don't see an issue.

Also I only came on here looking for advice. If people was fed up with answering the same questions they should ignore it.

    I am sorry I asked.

Yes, it's not snobbery about owning a 13 year old car, but it is questioning buying one, and the expectations around it.
For the age, the type of car and the price paid, it's not bangernomics, it just seems like a strange purchase, unless there are other facts we don't know.
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

Ok, a novel idea on here...
Have you spoken to the trader about the problem since it occurred?
    What did they say?
    Have they offered to help?

Have you taken it to your local mechanic to get them to check it out?
    What have they said?
Buying an old car where you don't know the history means that either you need to be good at understanding and fixing cars, or you need to have a friendly mechanic who will help.

  • There's nothing wrong with owning a 13 year old car as long as it's something good. A disco isn't! ;)
  • Oi, as a workhorse it's great and probably the greenest vehicle I've ever owned.

And less likely to be nicked than a Defender.:)

    Hi,

Bought a car from a trader. Well it said trader on Auto Trader. I have a screenshot of this as the ad is now gone since the car is sold.

If on the receipt it says sold as seen does this mean tough if it breaks.

I have had it since 20th January 2014. I part exchanged my car in for it and he filled in the traders part of my old car's V5.

Basically there are a few problems which was never mentioned in the ad.

Erratic speedo (Common on my car. Easy fix if nothing is seized) Speedo sometimes reads 0 while I am travelling causing the car to judder as its not getting fuel.
Tonight the front wheel started to knock. Only for about 20 seconds then it stopped.
    Has a squeak on engine.

None of this happened when I took it for a test drive.

Do I have any come back with this?

The car is a Ford Focus 1.6 Ghia 2001.

    Cheers

It is illegal for a trader to write "Sold as Seen" on an invoice as it is seen as trying to remove the buyers rights under the SOGA.

However, no 13 year old car is going to be perfect, and i'm not seeing much happening that wouldnt be considered "normal" on a car in the twilight years of its life.

No snobbery, but people need to be realistic about what they expect when buying a car so old
