I do wonder if it's an age thing - most of these people are aged between 16 and 24 - and they haven't moved on from a school situation where the teachers recognised everybody.I need to think of something new here...0 -
Does anyone else get this… It happens to me a couple of times a week.
Office Phone rings. I answer and the caller says “Hi. I got a missed call from this number.” Then stops. There are about 8 of us who could have called you and you are one of at least 200 people that we might have reason to call. Why do you think we psychically know who you are? Are you so arrogant or self-centred that you can’t imagine that you aren’t the most important person in our universe?
Actually, a lot of them are 16 to 24 year olds so could it be that they are so used to mobile phones displaying the name of a caller that they can’t conceive of the possibility of a landline not doing this?
But then… Doorbell rings. I answer the door and say “Hello. How can we help?” About a third try to walk straight through me without speaking. About a third mumble “I’m here for the creative thing…”. Only 1 in 3 actually identify themselves. If you can’t manage a simple sentence like “Hello, I’m X and I’ve got an interview with Mr Y” maybe there’s a reason you’re unemployed?
Or am I just getting old?
May be I do not want you to know who I am, until I know who you are and why you are calling?
Also how should I know your in a office where you share a phone with other people? Why should I even care?
Its not hard for you to ask a question about a person name and other details.
Saying that I normally type the number into Google and 9 times out 10 its a PPI ringing.0 -
I had a few texts from the OH over the years when she has been out with friends saying
"phone battery is about to die" I will ring from my mates phone when its time to pick me up. I do not have that person number.
So if a PPI place rings up in the mean time and I miss call I will just ring back assuming its the mates number etc.
I would not bother saying who I am as they will recognise my voice etc.0 -

#1 You are calling him (that's what the vent is all about)
#2 He answered the phone with good manners and said the company name. What more do you want?
#3 Try reading a thread before responding.0 -

Nothing wrong with just answering the 1st post.
His post is a vent about people not giving enough information, yet ironically he is doing the same and your having to wait well over 8 seconds to find this outbefore you find out the rest.
If he had not had a go about arrogance etc at the end I would have left it as fair enough.
I do not think NBlondon has mentioned the company he works for.
So eg if it was British gas, I would probably reply back differently then if it was C&R solicitors.0 -
I accept that the specifics about how HE answers the phone weren't clear in the OP. But this was clarified later, hence the "Try reading a thread before responding" comment.
Whatever company he works for is irrelevant (although it seems like it is an employment agency or similar), if he has already given the company name it is sheer stupidity for the caller not to identify themself in any way.0 -

That depends on if you know the company. As I said if its British gas your probably know whats its about it, if they are your gas provider.
However if C&J solicitor rang. I have no idea who they are, or what they want. So I would ask some questions before giving out my personal details, after all it could be a scam.
I could call people for 1 ring. Then when you back "I could say I am your gas provider". then expect you to give out your name etc.0 -
Well it was contained in the phrase "I answer" because my standard way to do that is "Good Morning/Afternoon, <name of organisation>, how can we help?" So the caller now knows who we are. We don't cold call, we wouldn't have their number unless they had already been in touch with us (applying for something or enquiring) - so they should recognise the name. That depends on if you know the company. As I said if its British gas your probably know whats its about it, if they are your gas provider.
So, it's paranoia then ??? They don't recognise the number - but they ring back 'cause they can't bear not to know then they won't admit who they are in case it's a scammer who can now do horrible things by knowing their name? Can't work that one out - if it's a scammer or a PPI seller doing random calls then the very act of responding has given them the information that the number is valid and has a human being.
Googling our number will certainly give you our website - and if that doesn't remind you who we are or why we might have called you - perhaps you shouldn't bother?
If you don't identify yourself and just ask what we're calling about then the next question is going to have to be "Can you give us your name please." So you haven't found out anythingI need to think of something new here...0 -
My mother, a retired Personell Manager, retired Christian Book Shop Owner, retired Teacher, answers the phone "YES!"
That's all you get, until you've provided enough information to her to make her actually say anything else.
No prompts, nothing. Obviously for family and friends you only have to start talking, and she's happy to talk, but cold callers must find it a bit hard. LOL
YES.
Hello, is that Mrs J?
.......silence
Hello, have I got through to Mrs J?
.......silence
Hello, is there anyone there?
.......YES. I'm waiting to hear you tell me something I don't know. I know who I am.
Well, I'm calling from XYZltd blah blah blah ...

I actually had to call back a missed call the other day because I didn't recognise the number (although it was local to me) and when I searched for it on line there was no record.
I'm in the process of moving jobs and homes, so it could have been about that, hence needing to call back.
The person answered "hello?" so all I could really say was I'd had a missed call...who am I calling.
It made me giggle just because I thought back to this thread :rotfl:0
