You appear to have a problem reading. This thread is not about answering calls, it is about ringing back missed calls.Abbafan1972 wrote:I hate it when I ask people for a contact number at work and they don't know their own number or they say "the number I'm calling from", our office phones don't have caller display and 1471 doesn't work, so we're unable to find this out.I need to think of something new here...0

I never call back a missed call and say "Hi my name is xx and I had a missed call" because any time I do that, they ask my name again.
I'm afraid I'm one of those who will call a number back and say that I had a missed call. If the company identifies themselves, what else is there to say?
"Good morning, you're through to MSE forum, how can I help?"
"Hi, my name is RosiPossum and I had a missed call on my phone from you, could you tell me what it may be regarding?"
"And what was your name again?"
That's how it usually goes. If I add the part about what it may regard, that's usually implied and unless the call centre calls everyone about one thing, they can't know straight away.
Best thing, I think, would be for the operator to ask if I'd had any dealings with the company before, and say what they do. You never know, it may be an incorrect number so the person who is calling back has no idea what the company does.0 -
Actually - it's about failing to identify yourself when responding to a missed call or a message. Or going somewhere for an interview and not identifying yourself or stating why you've come.
Yep - we get that too. I ask "What's the best number to call you back on?" and they say "This one." Like I said before, I can only think that they are so acclimatised to mobiles that display a number that they assume it's universal.
That is stupid though. If they're turning up there, they obviously know why they're there!
My post above was in relation to places who I haven't had recent dealings with. If I applied for a job and they then called me and answered, I'd say something like "Hi, I just had a missed call from here. I applied for a job recently so maybe it's about that?" Then I'd expect the call handler to say something like "Could be! What's your name please?"0 -

You said:Why would anyone bother calling back a missed call that they don't recognise? If the caller can't be bothered to leave a message then as far as I'm concerned their call wasn't important and they get ignored.
So I responded as to a situation where that might not be the case for people. Not really that difficult to follow no is it?0 -
You appear to have the problem reading not me,
You said:

Nope, you still apear to be totally incapable of reading or understanding what you read. You saidEither way I know if my phone rings, I am answering it regardless
This was never about not answering calls - it is about calling back calls that you have missed where they failed to leave a message.0 -

The start of this thread was about someone else calling YOU and THEY start the call with "I had a missed call from this number ............... <nothing else said>"
So when transient said "Either way I know if my phone rings, I am answering it regardless" he was correct, because it would be the other person calling.0 -

But the post by cattie http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/member.php?u=6080 that he was quoting was agreeing with me that it is strange to call back a missed call. He then went on about the fact that he always answers calls. The OP also never said he didn't answer calls, he was complaining about callers calling back and not announcing who they are - so transient's comments about always answering calls are are irrelevant to both the OP's and my/cattie's posts.0 -
So it is about calling back missed calls then, which I said I don't know why anyone in their right mind would bother doing - whether they identify themselves or not.
RosiPossum has a good reason for following up every call - if you are jobhunting - or temping - agencies and recruitment consultants (aka one above estate agents) do call and don't always leave messages and if you haven't responded in 10 minutes - they will move on.
If you've applied for a job through us then I'd hope you'd recognise the organisation name in my opening line "Good Afternon, <name of org>" and be able to say "Hello, It's RosiPossum here; I got a missed call - is it about the coupon clipping job I applied for?" If you just say you've applied for a job that only narrows you down to one of the 40 or 50 people who have applied for one of the half dozen jobs that are live at the moment.
Oh and that reminds me of a subsidiary vent. When I ask your name - surname is most useful; given and family names better... You are not the only Chloe we deal with - you're just one of 5I need to think of something new here...0 -
Surname is usually fine for me, I'm Peacocke so there are pretty few of us around!
But I always give first name first too. It's polite and helpful. Do you seriously get people just giving first names?! Wow.
I'm a nurse, so usually if it was responding to a job I'd be calling the hospital who'd know exactly what job it was. But I take your point about clarifying when it could be one of many things!0
