I had the mother of all rows with an otherwise great mate (granted this was before she took redundancy and is now freelancing) ... She all but called me as daft as a brush for throwing money at the mortgage - pointing out that I was forcing myself to make soup to save money.
No amount of convincing her that I have soup (1) because it fills you up for less calories (2) it means I don't waste my fortnightly shop of veggies (3) yes it bloody saves money would tell her otherwise!
It is easier for people to scoff and for me to just stay quiet and make my payments. Of course I then wrote about it in the Huffington Post which kinda blew that!- Mortgage @ March 2008: £194,965 ; Lightbulb Moment: July 2011: £164,926; End Date: March 2033

I am pleased it isn't just me then. I think for some people the payoff in 20 years time or what ever is just to far away to want to forsake things for now. I am going to be earning extra cash from having forigen exchange students and also spend my money in a wiser way. I think it will be a case of good months and not so much but I don't plan to forsake having fun
Mr c and I were talking yesterday and think that we will probably sell up in 20 years and downsize. If not before. So now we are thinking we will aim to downsize once we have paid off the mortgage.Mortgage free Start amount feb 2014 227000. Current amount nov 2014 217000.

Just transferred. £150 from eBay sales. I am sad that the amount has gone up from last week but I guess that is the reality of the interest I am paying. So far this month managed to over pay 1790.00. Hope to manage half that again in March. Have some students booked in for April and may

Ok, i have done some things that are not entirely mortgage free indicative. I have purchased a camper can. I am splitting it with my brother. My logic is it will save money on holidays in the longer term. And life is for living. Still managed to make huge over payments in February and will be as focused on the mortgage as ever. I also got an allotment am going over to look at the forum page about growing. It is £29 a year so hopefully I will be able to grow lots of veg. I am thinking it will keep us busy as well. Fingers crossed for some sunny daysMortgage free Start amount feb 2014 227000. Current amount nov 2014 217000.

Fairly inexpensive weekend. Going away in four weeks so must get. Ack on the selling mission for some spending money. I am focusing in the end of each month and making a further over payment then. Was a bit shocked when my current account statement came in and I had transferred lots but managed to be very good in other spending so not much different to a normal month. Have the students being booked in now for April and may so hopefully they keep coming and that can all go to over payments. I am trying out some new recipes as don't want to be paying for lots of expensive foods but equally want to feed them well.Mortgage free Start amount feb 2014 227000. Current amount nov 2014 217000.

Since walking out of a lucrative IT career and becoming a journo, I find it easy to "hide" my change in spending habits because everyone just assumes that a 50+% pay cut means you can't go out as much rather than choosing to spend less on takeaways etc to have more to put towards the mortgage. And I keep it quiet unless I have mates who do the same - but they are the same - they keep it quiet unless they meet like minded souls!

I always get laughed at by people at work as I have had an allotment since I was 23 and I usually bring in my own lunch and homemade soups. It doesn't bother me as I have just bought my first house with my boyfriend and it's far bigger than we ever thought we would be able to afford. We now have some pennies to spend on doing it up (this weekend was spent doing the garden - next weekend building some veg beds!) as our food budget for the two of us (£25 pw) is pretty good. Can't wait until summer and lots of yummy food :j
Good luck with your journey Charlie!

I am spending the evening revamping a dressing table I got off frecycle. £10 for the paint and a sample of wall paper for free and it will be a fab bit of furniture.
