Charity shops are whete people go who have been ordered by the courts to do community payback. Putting a jobseeker in there amongst someone with a criminal record is not right.
The two are not comparable.
Nonsense. I worked in a local charity shop for over a year when I was unemployed. My mum worked in there on a Saturday for a couple of years, she works full time, there were loads of different people who worked there, students, people with part time jobs, young people. There are also many retired people who volunteer in charity shops.
Also, Ive worked in full time jobs with more than one person with a criminal record. It is possible for people to have a record and sort their life out.
Just because the OP doesnt want to volunteer doesnt mean that everyone else should be written off.0 -
Some people are looking for work because they have been caring for children. Any decent savvy employer will recognisd that. They wont think your a criminal. There ard reasons why some people have a gap. Genuine reasons.
And there are also people who sit on their backside and dont want to work and put the blockers on anything that might lead to a full time job.0 -
If I were unemployed, volunteering (probably in a museum) would be the first thing I would be doing. Either that or asking around for an internship.0

What makes you think I don't want to volunteer? you don't know anything about me.
I am currently looking for volunteer positions on the following website: http://www.do-it.org.uk/search/vc/3628
I have made a few applications on that site so in future keep your opinions to yourself because like I stated, you don't know anything about me.0 -
Have you sorted your cat out now?0

In that case, I wish you good luck! Hope you find a placement you like0 -

Being out of work for as long as I have has not stopped me being accepted to university on three different occasions. Five offers in 2010 - I withdrew my place because I was too ill to start. One offer in 2011 – The classes clashed with my long-term therapy which was starting at the same time. In addition, another offer last year - I finally decided the course I wanted to do was not for me and I was doing it for all the wrong reasons!
In my 7 years out of work I have been hospitalised 6 times for mental health problems, tried to take my own life 4 times, but still completed an Access Course, Literacy Level 1 & 2, Numeracy Level 1 & 2, Mental Health Awareness Level 1 & 2, English GCSE (B) and ECDL (IT Skills). I have also volunteered for a charity and helped create a forum in a hospital for patients with Mental Health Problems – my CV is far from empty, and I am certain when I am ready to return to work it will not take me long to find a job. I have guaranteed references from five different people! I also plan to study part time at university from this September for a degree that will take six years to complete. I want to do this because achieving a degree has been a dream of mine for some time.
All I can say is good luck, fantastic attitude and approach to it all despite all the obstacles. Shame a few people who constantly whinge here can't be bothered to even put in 10% of the positive effort you are.Professional Data Monkey
