How should I block up this stupid little pipe? And what's it for?

Water shouldn't really come out of that pipe anyway - even unsealed.
I'd look deeper into the problem and suggest you have some kind of minor blockage in the U-bend.
Perhaps its worth checking anyway while the water is still flowing away - albeit slowly.0 -
Re: the plug socket... Thanks for pointing that out! Maybe I should get an electrician to move it to the right of the under-sink cabinet? For the time being I just won't plug anything in it. In fact, I'll put a childproof thingy plug in it. (FYI the house is a standard Barratt Homes newbuild cicra 2005 - this is how they built it!). I'm glad you guys pointed it out otherwise I would just have assumed it was safe because presumably whoever put it there knows more than I do.
Thanks missprice for the help. Why do you think I have two gold turny things one above the other?
Re: the stoppy thing. Thanks also - it makes sense that it's the wrong type but not size. I hate plumbling!!!!
Tom - What happens is if I just run the tap normally everything is fine... but if I fill the sink and do some washing up then pull the plug out to drain a lot of it spurts out the little sticky-out pipe where the washing machine waste should connect. I think it's to do with gravity or physics or something. The sink doesn't seem to drain slowly though.0 -
Cut fingers off an old pair of rubber gloves and put one or more over the open end of the waste pipe.
There is a deeper problem there , though. Probably something stuck in the u-bend.0 -
You could replace the vertical piece with a plain fitting, one without the two washing machine/dishwasher spigots. They're standard figments, get along to B&Q or a plumber's merchant with the measurements to get a replacement.
If you get all three pieces as replacements, they might line up better than the current ones do (they're a bit squint)
If you want to leave the spigots in place for later dishwasher etc, get a length of plastic hose from B&Q which will fit over the spigots, and a couple of jubilee clips - put the hose on both spigots, connecting them to each other, and tighten the jubilee clips over the hose on each spigot to make them watertight0 -

Its a Barret home you say? That could be why you have 2 gold turny things. No one will die if you turn them both, but as its all currently working, don't rock the boat.
The stoppy thing I saw in the picture. You were trying to put it in the wrong way round. Think of male and female yes. The stoppy thing is male, the sticky outy bit your putting stoppy thing in is female.
If that is as unhelpful as I think try you tube for a more useful video.:)63 mortgage payments to go.

:rotfl: Umm NO, water will always find its own level, and drain by any means to that level, which in this case is dictated by the lowest point of the outlet of the trapSignature removed0 -
good to see that you have taken absolutly no notice of anything anyone on this thread has told you to get to blank off the two spigots & you still are trying to use the completely wrong fitting that you bought in the first placeI'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.0 -
Hey no fair! I did take notice. I unscrewed the thingy as instructed and tried fitting my doodah and it didn't work, so I posted for more advice. And the advice is... the doodah is the wrong type.
So I'm going to take the advice that a few people have given and replace the white pipe thing with one without holes, and I'm going to replace the U-bend and so on at the same time, as suggested, just in case there's a blockage or something.
Thanks to everyone for the ingenious suggestions!0 -
Ok what you were sold was a 15mm stop end for 15mm plastic pipe. If you don't want to change the trap then look in your local yellow pages for independent plumbers merchants. You want the bung for the WM2 spigot or alternatively a new spigot (will come complete with a bung). Don't waste your time with B&Q or the other sheds they wont stock them. As you are not using the sink you could unscrew the spigot take it with you and get it properly sized. The different brands may have a slight size variation.0
