How should I block up this stupid little pipe? And what's it for?

I'm just in the process of moving into my new house and I'm having a problem in the kitchen. Every time I drain the sink the water spurts back out of that stupid little white pipe in the upper-right of the this picture. I think maybe the washing machine waste pipe should connect to it but I don't have a washing machine yet. What would be the best way of stopping this happening? I went to b&q and bought a 15mm end-stop but it doesn't fit. To be honest I've no idea what I'm doing and am completely out of my depth when dealing with anything more complicated that a flat-head screwdriver (or at a push, an allen key).

You need to unscrew this bit and find the right size end cap for it, or replace the whole vertical section.

Oh god. I think I need a plumber. Is there a special tool for unscrewing it? Thanks for replying.

It's for a washing machine or dishwasher waste outlet hose.

You can block it up. Unscrew it with your Mark 1 unscrewing device.

Most cost effective is to unscrew it, block the spout up with mastic and put it back on.

Just unscrew it with your hands, put a 2p coin there & screw it back.

Another cheap & temporary fix is to bung a cork down the open end. You may need to try several bottles to find a cork that fits.

No, you don't need a plumber, even if you replace the drain with a new bit... it's just a learning curve.

Thanks a lot for the replies guys. I did try a cork a few weeks ago but it didn't fit so I gave up and have been using the bathroom sink instead. I'll try unscrewing the thingy and shoving something in the hole tomorrow and let you know how I get on. Eek.

How about a bit of plastic? Unscrew the hose, cover the end of the pipe with plastic and screw the outlet back on?

Take your photo to Wickes, B&Q or similar and they will sell you the bit you need.
