Not sure how much driving you do but a lot of petrol stations are on busy noisy roads, it's not always possible to hear it.

I've been driving daily since 1994 & live in a city with near half a million population. Is that good enough?

If you live in a country where the petrol stations don't have auto cut offs there you are going to be extremely careful. In this country they all have these devices fitted to the pumps so we tend to rely on them

Maybe it's just me but I don't tend to switch off and rely on auto cut off whilst dealing with a highly flammable liquid.

Who are we, do you speak for the nation as a whole?

I for one don't rely on them but I would never presume to speak for everyone else but then you appear to have some insider knowledge as you have already stated that Tesco staff have told lies about this incident.

Ok I run a petrol station so ill make a few points
We display on all our pumps a sign telling the customer that the "safety" cut off device cant be relied upon due to many factors beyond our control and they as well as us have a duty of care when filling a vehicle.
the things beyond our control are
shape and style of filler neck
how far the nozzle is in the car
if the nozzle has already "Clicked"
If the customer is paying any attention

the cctv we use is all HD, you need to be able to read number plates at a distance and provide useable evidence in court
It is amazing when a customer complains that they have spilt fuel on their footwear that
They have been looking anywhere but the filler
the shoes/boots are ALWAYS very expensive (our record is £600 brouges)
The pump has clicked off a few times allready (their trying to get to a round figure/ brim)

As a side note we also have an hd camera looking down onto the counter viewing everything going into the till, its amazing how many people go white after exclaiming "I gave you a twenty not a ten" and they are invited to view the cctv footage"

I even have people question the accuracy of the pumps based on their fuel guage in their car. I have £20,000 petrol pumps, checked bt trading standards and sealed by w&m. the accuracy is never under deliver and normaly 0 to 40 ml over deliver on a 20L fill, they have a flappy float in a odd shape tank and a guage with a resolution of a gallon?? Yet its always the pump thats going to be faulty!!
At the end of the day the customer is the one disspensing a volatile flammable chemical, They need to take extreme care and yet never do

Zandoni has the mentality that if you work in retail then you always lie.

Just have a nose through Zandoni's previous posts.

I'll just post a couple of examples:

OP, sorry about the moronic replies you have received, this place is full of angry shop assistants.

There are at least two shop assistants participating in this thread Money-Saving-King and SimonSays, both of them have been a little bit on the rude side. This helps to prove my point that there are shop staff out there that are a bit over zealous.

    Need I say more!

It may be obvious to you, but it's obviously WRONG to me. The tank does not "taper to a spout", the tank has a pipe connected to it which goes up to the filler cap. The pipe is a constant width for several cm. the pipe also provides for flexibility between the tank and the bodywork.
Yes lots are like that and that would make them so much harder to know when they are full without an auto stop.

I'm sure your station does display this sign, but I've never seen one in any petrol station that I have visited.

I'm also sure that lots of people try to get away with all sorts of things.

But the OP should have been shown the video if they weren't use the pump correctly.

If the OP had a black car you would tell them that it's white. Your'e whole aim here is to tell people that they are wrong.

No I have probably thanked over 1000 posts since joining this forum, that means I agree therefore the post I'm thanking is right. I have thanked a few posts in this thread if you care to check.

This post by you simply proves the mentality I was taking about earlier.
