I've got a diesel my oh has a petrol. I alway triple check I've got the right pump and watch what I'm doing as my tank easily takes 4x what his will. So I'm cautious.
OCD? or Sensible?
Or just lucky that you have never been distracted and done it wrong.
It is impossible to be paying 100% attention to the nozzle, the display and any other cars driving around all at the same time, as you can't look at all three simultaneously. And that's even if you're not distracted by something else nearby.
If OP had come on here saying they'd been overcharged at the petrol station by a faulty pump that had registered 3x the amount of fuel actually dispensed, the same users would be on here saying it's their own fault for not paying attention to the display while they were filling.0 -
Surely if you're filling the tank to the top, you don't need to look at the display ? You just fill it till it's full, however much it costs ?0

This is just my opinion, but I am sure the Lady was after some advice not personal experiences or opinions on what, if's or maybe's....I feel there is just too much judging of her as a person and not enough people giving advise.
Just my opinion, wanted to say for like minded people. (I hope its more than just me that feels this way!) and please don't start to attack me for speaking my mind....0 -

You are allowed to give opinions on us giving opinions but we are not allowed to give opinions.
I'm also sure your aware this is a public forum where Advice, Experiences and Opinions are given and allowed. It isn't a FAQ board.
Advice and experiences help to solve a problem and on public forums opinions are allowed, they come with the territory.
By the way this wasn't an attack this is just purely a reply to your judgemental post.0 -
The fact is they have now confirmed the pump working as intended and cctv shows a nozzle not inserted correctly (probably the op edging it out to fill it to the brim).
The onus is now on the op to catch them lying and prove them wrong, if they did.
I doubt they would as their would be a record of the pump being taken out of service to be repaired.
If they did repair it then a judge in the small claims court could make them produce these documents for the proof the op needs, if not they have no case to answer.0 -
IMO the auto cut off is there as an additional safety measure to stop flammable liquid being spilled over the forecourt. Its not actually there as a convenience to the customer to let them exercise less care.
Unless there were other circumstances (for example a new car) surely OP knew roughly how much their car would take and should've been paying more attention as the display neared that figure? Or perhaps they were more zoned out than we think as they must've missed the audible cues that their tank was full also (surely I'm not the only one that can hear the tank filling?).
But I'm wondering how the boots ended up ruined as OP said the fuel was running down the side of the car (as you'd expect it to when overflowing), so wasn't spurting out. Their feet presumably weren't right under the car. Unless its splashes on the side/back (assuming OP wasnt doing some exorcist type neck twist to see the display) or it happened when OP was transferring the nozzle back to its holder?
I'm all for consumer rights but personally, I think theres more chance the OP failed to exercise reasonable care (especially when handling a flammable liquid!) than any negligence on the stations part. You keep using that word. I agree, OP didn't exercise reasonable care. But if the safety feature failed too then liability may be shared.0 -

£10 of diesel - around a gallon and a half so a fair bit more than a few splashes.0 -
As it looks like it was not the filling station's fault, perhaps now you should contact a specialist dry cleaner and see if your boots can be restored to their former chavtasticness. Not a high street dry cleaner but a specialist to have the best chance of success.
