You do need to stand well back so you are not in the firing line...0

In your opening post you asked for "advice / opinions" and this is what you have been given.
If you only wanted advice or opinions that agreed with you then there's not really much point in posting.
The auto cutout on fuel nozzles is normally only effective when there is a strong flow of fuel. If you are just dispensing slowly (such as when watching the gauge and trying not to go over a certain amount), it's not uncommon for these not to work properly as the fuel won't have a chance to back up in the nozzle and the mechanism won't trip off.

Unhelpful because you don't get a reply you like?0 -

Not all pumps have a working auto cut off...but then you with all your experience will know that and not be caught out? Perhaps not?0 -

Why were you bothering to look at the cost if you were brimming the tank anyway? Watching it isn't going to make it any cheaper!
In summary, you should have been paying more attention.

Exactly, as a safety mechanism, but not the only one.
When operating something such as a petrol pump, the primary safety feature is the person using it (which is why only adults are allowed to use them).0 -

Considering how flammable fuel is I would not & never have relied on the pump to cut out.0 -
I'd doubt that the CCTV camera system had the resolution to see if you had the nozzle in properly. I'd definitely ask for proof, I doubt they even bothered to watch it. Most people look away when filling up their cars to avoid the evil fumes.
Personally I'd contact the supermarket's Head Office and see what they say.0 -

It's what happens when you try and top up to the brim, you get the auto cut off so edge the nozzle out untill the tank is as full as it can be.
Auto cut off cant stop you overfilling.
Their cctv seems to say this is what happened with the nozzle not in properly.0
