It seems you don't know the facts about Contactless either. My Barclays Contactless Debit Card is online, and will decline if it cannot connect to the bank. All transactions are processed immediately and the amount removed from my available balance.

Sorry I stand corrected, my apologies. :)

It does appear some UK banks if a Contactless transaction is over a set threshold it will go online to gain live authorisation.

The rest of my post is still valid.

    Cheers

With my recently closed FlexDirect, only about 50% of debit card transactions updated my available balance.

I have both online and offline debit cards and don't notice any difference bar a few extra seconds at the till for the former. As reculsive46 says many retailers go online for all transactions.

It'll happen on 99% of transactions. Cards only generally go offline these days if the card machine can't contact the bank at all (I.e. Plane, train or internet/phone connection not working at retailer). Stop worrying, the cash card is the only nationwide card that is online. Theres not much else any of us can say.

If you want proof, go buy a magnetic stripe reader.

Contactless generally operates offline for all transactions but Barclays on their online only cards and prepaid cards do operate via online contactless (Same as Paytag). Barclays and Metro are the only two issuers who issue contactless on online only cards.

Some other issuers contactless may on the odd occasion randomly go online to check the card is not stolen but I've ever seen this once.
