Yep! Open the D/W and pull out the top tray before loading time. Put a reasonably clean small plate flat somewhere in the top tray. Cut the tablet as best you can on the plate. All the mess will be on a plate that needs cleaning anyway or will be on your dishwasher door. Keep the big bit for next time and tip the rest into your soap dispenser. Tiny bits that escape will just help out a bit with your first rinse. No problem.

I break them in the wrapper before you open it, bang it with a spoon then all the mess is inside the wrapper.

I don't know if this is an urban myth or not but someone once told me that you can cook a whole salmon in the DW by wrapping it in foil and placing in the top rack for the longest, hottest cycle. Hav'nt tried it tho;) Wonder if it also works for fishfingers:D

Don't know about the salmon in the dishwasher, but just to be awkward and 'post off-subject' I know that you can soft-boil an egg in the kettle, this is a handy tip for people who have to stay in hotels for work or want cheap holidays and don't want to spend too much buying food when away!

BTW: Good to see you again MATH, these days I am posting so little that I am losing touch with all my good friends :(

I just snap my D/W tabs in half before I open them. No problems, no mess and they usually snap cleanly. I do have the D/W door open and open packet over it in case there are any stray bits, but not had any problems so far. I use Fairy tabs BTW.

I use those three in one jobs that have a power ball. Trying to cut those little er, things in half isn't easy.

Actually I've just read the box and they're rinse aid. So if I set it aside whole for loads that have glassware in I shouldn't have a problem since I've got a rinse aid dispenser anyway. (Said rinse aid dispenser is going to be topped up from the tip in cleaning and vinegar tips next time.)

I've got some of those at the moment (Glist) - I saw through the tablet while it's wrapped a few times and then snap it. Works most of the time.

It's been so long since I used powder I can't for the life of me remember how much I used. Probably the max recommended because the water round here is harder than the concrete. We build bridges with it :) Ig half a tablet starts leaving things filmy I'll have to think of some other way.

I use cheapo clothes washing bio in my machine most of the time and a sprinkle of proper DW powder now and again just to show I care. For everyday loads I don't think there is much difference in wash quality although I use proper DW powder for very dirty loads.
