Don't know if that will help, but I use diluted bleach on containers that keep very orangey sauce or my chopping baord after too many carrots. They come back a treat!

Another DW phenomenon is stucco effect mugs and plates after a cycle containing anything that has been within sniffing distance of mashed potato. No matter how much you rinse beforehand everything comes out 'texturized'

That I can agree with. Mr TM SWEARS BLIND HE ALWAYS RINSES the mash off plates and pans before packing the dishwasher but I have to re-wash stuff. Luckily, tonight he went out so I got to pack DW so pots were clean, after scrummy cottage pie.

As long as my stuff is clean, I don't care if it's pinky/orangey. Mind you. my en-suite toothbrush holder MAY still look better if it wasn't that slightly orangey colour. Ho hummm

So, to get back on topic again, has anyone found a way to guard against discolouration? It certainly doesn't look as though my things will ever recover - so prevention... if it's possible?

If you D/W things, then be prepared for discoloured plastics. Nothing you can do about it IMO. You can bleach things, but you may think that's a waste of bleach and poluting the environment all for whiter tupperware. I have tinted but clean tupperware and it still holds the same stuff just as well. :D I use enough bleach, so I'll save the environment from that bit extra.

Eeeewwww - stinky milk - I don't envy you . I always washed mine, just didn't D/W mine (when I had a milko) Trying to get Mr TM to wash out the placky bottles before he puts them in the garage for me to take to the recycling bin is hard enough, and that may be 3 weeks!!

The wire tray in the grill, the oven grills, and the pan stands on the oven top all go in the dish washer - much easier to clean.

Not all at once - but each will lay flat in the bottom tray of mine and then I just fill with pots and pans as normal.

never thought of cleaning the oven grills and pan stands this way - cheers

In essence it's a "free wash" because they don't take up any space that could be used by something else. And it's by far the easiest way to clean the pesky things!

I always assumed it was the tomato in whatever I'd cooked.

My daddy puts glass vases in the dishwasher, and they come up really clean. We hate him doing it though

I do this on a low heat but only with glass or ceramic, not lead crystal.

I have a friend who washes all her crystal glasses, decanters and vases, once a year and they come up beautifull shiny. So I decided to try a lead crystal vase - I opened the door, the vase shone like......well, like crystal and as I picked it up out of the dishwasher, it broke into thousands of pieces all over the floor!!!

Even though I washed it on low, I learned not to do it again. I did wonder though......................even though my friend and I both used low settings, whether there is any difference in the temp. Some ovens run hotter than others so perhaps dishwashers do too.

I think discolouration has been the spices in curries and chillies - but other clear plastic things go cloudy and there doesn't seem to be anything I can add to the wash to safeguard against it.

I know everything is clean... it just doesn't look as though it is.

I have everyday glasses that are 60% lead crystal and have been washed in the DW day in day out for the last 5-6 yrs with no scratching, dulling or greying. My normal crystal for entertaining also goes through a full cycle when used with no probs either. My very best crystal at £75 a glass I darn't risk - in fact we don't even drink out of them- they're just to look at;)

I read somewhere here that you can cut dishwasher tablet in half and I have started doing this and everything seems fine but has anyone found a way to do this without too much mess?

The other thing is that one new yeas eve we got a whole salmon from JS reduced to silly money and having heard that you could cook it in dishwasher I tried. Yes it was fine - wrapped in foil but put on bottom to be nearer heating element, hot wash NO detergent!! The only problem we had was lifting it out when cooked as it was very fragile I wouild suggest putting it on a tea towel for example so you can 'sling' it out to cool.
