Current EDF Fix coming to an end

I have signed up online for a 2017 tariff from 1May. The e-mail that I received indicates that:
Remember that you will still be able to cancel this new tariff until the date on which you'll transfer over on 1 May 2014.
Cancelling after that incurs no cancellation charge. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I have got the same problem but looking at EDF tariffs they are way too expensive. So I am thinking of going over to First Utility because they are the cheapest for me.0

Do a bit of reading on this site about First Utility before making a final decision. If you do decide to go with them, then topcashback are offering more than the £30 cashback you can get via MSE.
I have an EDF fix finishing this month. As above First Utility are cheapest for me, and actually cheaper than my current fix, so in hindsight I'd probably have been better off not having gone for a fix in the first place.
Next best for me is an npower fix till March 2016 with crucially no exit fees if I decided to jump ship early. Npower don't exactly have glowing reports here either but they seem a slightly better bet than First Utility I think.0 -
Although I have signed up to a new fixed tariff with EDF (just in case the Ukranian crisis erupts), I am also looking at switching to First Utility. According to Which, they do not fair too badly in the Which 2014 supplier survey.
I seem to recall that a smart meter was a signing up requirement. Has this now been dropped or do they fit one? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Interesting. Survey results here FWIW:

This seems the best option for me also.
I had a brief online EDF chat , and they said their current tariffs are going soon !!!0 -

They would say that wouldn't they!!
I confess that I am still weighing up the pros and cons of a 2 or 3 year deal. Notwithstanding the favourable reports on Which about First Utility, I have struck them off my list as it would be foolish to ignore what has been written about them on this site. I am leaning towards a 2 year fix with OVO Energy - any comments? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
To me by booking the 2017 fix rate that automatically starts at the end of my current April 2014 deal , is a " nothing to lose, all to gain safe option" but if in the meantime I do find something better , I can simply move on for free, and if not I stay knowing that i have a booked rate waiting to go onto, even if it does get removed soon and prices rise again, im ok !!!.0

I've gone with the two year fix with OVO, it seemed the best of the cheaper options although I'll still be paying slightly more than I have with EDF. I've never had any cause to regret fixing, fingers crossed this will be the right option too!0

I am leaning towards this 'fix' as well. As always, the problem is comparing 'like for like'. We have a wood burning stove and PV Solar which distorts the figures slightly. A 2015 EDF fix would cost me £120 pa more whereas a 2017 EDF fix would cost me £600 more (i.e.; £200pa for 3 years). Moving to OVO, would cost me £200 more for 2 years (i.e.; £100pa for 2 years). In practical terms, the difference in the 2 fixes is only 9 months (Jun 16 to Mar 17). Is 9 months worth of price protection really worth £400 in extra payments? The downside is OVO's penalty clause (£30 exit charge per fuel). This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
