  • Just popping in to wish everyone a merry xmas and hope a prosperous new year and all that jazz!

Been looking at my figures this morning (while the kids play with the annoying loud toys you buy not thinking!!)
I have op'd £150 this morning so when my Jan mp comes out the mortgage left will be £3857.
My target for this year is to be finished in April. I will need to OP £1334 over 4 months on top of the stand OPs of £184 each month. I dont think this is possible as its an average £300 ish each month and I dont think I can afford that. But the final May payment should probably be about half the normal £900 at least.
I had my mortgage statement a few days ago telling me I had 1yr 3 months left haha!

Looking back on the figures of my mortgage I thought I would compare the last couple of years. This year has been tough financially and I thought it would show in the difference in OPs from 2014 and 2015 but on seeing it properly last year was worse!

    ...............................Mortgage Balance...% paid off.......LTV %
    Dec-13..........................£29,987.00...........66.............27
    Dec-14..........................£18,584.00...........79.............17
    Difference 13 to 14.......£11,403.00...........13.............10
    Dec-15.........................£4,887.00............95.............4.5
    Difference 14 to 15........£13,697.00...........16............12.5
    Diff in 2 years.................£25,100.00...........29.............22.5

    OPs in 2014 - £3500
    OPs in 2015 - £5473 :)

Since I started overpaying 7 years ago I have OP'd £41,724!! I can imagine if I hadnt OPd there would be nothing to show for that money. It would have vanished somehow. My mortgage would have another 16 YEARS left. Incredible.

So the plan for next year try and get as close to OPing £1334 as I can. Im not putting any money away for holiday as when I am finished then the next two months mortgage free can pay for that before I start saving for a new kitchen and bathroom.

  • I so agree that you would never have had that money if you had not overpaid.. Very well done to you, an amazing achievement for you. Goes to show how just changing everyday habits can make such a difference. 16 years of mortgage saved is huge.
Paid off mortgage nine years early in 2013. Now picking and choosing our work to fit in with the rest of our lives!
Still thrifty though, after all these years:D
  • Thanks SSS, I cant imagine the amount of interest I have saved, I lost count in the end.

Wonderful ND, you are right, that 40k would just have disappeared with nothing to show for it. Now, come spring, every month that money will be YOURS, not the building societies :j.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort
    :) Mortgage Balance = £0 :)

    On a Mission 2016
    - Overpay £1k on mortgage.
    - Save £2k. This is for an investment fund, not sure where I'll be putting it yet, perhaps p2p, need to do some serious lurking on the Savings and Investments boards :D
    - Secure new mortgage deal at end of 2016 when my fixed rate ends.
    - Grocery challenge - stick with this and reduce spend from £220 PCM to £200
    - Clothes. Aargh. I used to be very clothes frugal, rarely buy anything and shop in charity shops... Now, not so much. Target is £600 for the year for myself and DS.
    - Raise £500 selling things that remind me of ex. Should have done this ages ago. Weirdly was worried about hurting his feelings if he should see them online for sale. Daft as they are making me feel bad being in the house.
    - Health - increase exercise and lose a stone (say this every year :) )
    - Home - try and feel more at home in the house and community - renovate, decorate, explore area, get involved, volunteer, new activities etc
    - Take a holiday!
    - Make more time for friends and family

Sellotapes post above has made me look at my 2016 targets as they are quite similar.

    My 2016 targets
    • PAY OFF MY MORTGAGE!!! :j
    • Go on a few weekends away all around the coast (maybe not a one year target tho) as well as a main holiday in a great location not bothering how much it costs as long as it has a great sea view!!!
    • Start a monthly Premium Bonds
    • Pay more into my pension started a few months ago (From May)
    • Do comps more often (have a reminder on my phone to do them weekly but end up not doing them)
    • Keep up with the surveys (towards the end of the year I ignored them - except PC and these surveys paid for my DDs main xmas pressie :) )
    • Make new friends and get out more and enjoy life now the kids are older
    • Try and find a kitchen and bathroom I like (keep changing my mind on colour and style)
    • Meal Plan more than I have (tend to get lazy with it)
    • Have more games nights with the kids
    • Try and keep up with Konmarie decluttering and tidying so the kids can have mates over to stay (get the kids involved in chores- they'll love that!)
    • In relation to the point above my whole house needs redecorating and I do not love it at the moment but I can try and make it better before I get round to decorating after the kitchen and bathroom are done.
    • The old chestnut of doing more exercise, I may join the gym as I like their salsa and zumba classes and while I am on TCs I can get it half price and can use the pool too

Starting today with a games night with the kids :)
