Mind you, some things seem straightforward and just *aren't* - take, for example, my cheery pronouncement

'let's get the plumber round to sort out the heating'

Fixed it, still thunking. Fixed it again, and now the pilot light's gone out and we can't relight it so we now have NO heating and NO hot water and I have to ring all over again!

This is a VERY good argument for ignoring all home maintenance tasks and just leaving everything exactly how it was before, however annoying :p

Well this morning he did for free (quite rightly too, since it was him that did it wrong in the first place! :rotfl: )

He's coming back in a bit - not sure about this bit as what he did shouldn't have made the pilot light go out... Might need a new thermocouple thingy (which has happened before, they don't last forever).

    We'll see...

I kind of don't care, as long as it's warm! :rotfl:

Well two of them turned up on the way home... Yes, thermocouple had indeed burned out (looked very burned out!) - apparently a coincidence (and from the little I know about how boilers go together I believe them, although I suspect Mr Cheery doesn't!)

Lots of faffing dismantling boiler to get at the thing to replace it, lots more faffing to get it back together, dismantle again cos they'd dislodged said thermocouple in the process, put it back together again, take the front off cos they'd managed to press the re-set button... :rotfl:

Still, it's all over now and we're taking a deep breath... (and buying a carbon monoxide detector, which apparently we don't have  )

He's said he'll send us an invoice, just for the new part and an hour of labour, but he'll take into account that we've had other stuff done with them etc. Said he'd leave it a few days to make sure it stayed fixed before sending it :rotfl:

So I have no idea how much it will be, and right now I will pay good money to not have to think about boilers again for at least another 12 months :D :rotfl:
  • Yay for warm. As for how much fingers crossed its not too bad!

    :)
Total debt 26/4/18 <£1925 we were getting there.

They're nice chaps and know full well that I adore both them and the fact that they turn up on time (yes, really!!) so hopefully not too bad. I also spent some time quizzing them about new boilers for when ours does eventually die so I imagine they won't be unreasonable about it :)

Came in to say something non-boiler-related but forgot what it was... :o :rotfl:

Oh! Remembered (but it is actually to do with the boiler :o sorry...)

Radiators all need bleeding so washing not quite dry yet, but hot water is hotter and far more plentiful than ever before :j :j

Which is good, apart from the fact that clouds of steam filled the bathroom and it was so hot I couldn't get me flannel under the tap to wash my face

Which leads to a related problem - the cold tap on the bath is jammed shut, and has been since before I got here 9 years ago :$ rofl Never been a problem - a full tank of hot water was just enough (and just hot enough) for a bath before...

... I don't quite understand what's different now, but last night I filled the bath and hot water just kept coming out - really hot - and the bath was full before enough cold came out  Was like lowering myself gingerly into vat of boiling water  Had to get out again almost immediately before i fainted :o

So next job on the list - fix cold tap :rotfl:

What I'd give to live in a rented house right now!! (joking, but they do have some advantages!!)

Anyway, I'm in bed so best get off the phone before Martin messes up my posting again :rotfl:

Cheery, you're doing brilliantly at sorting all this out. And its typical of houses, I've finally learned - once one thing is sorted, it points out something else that isn't. Its the maintenance equivalent of a rolling boil!

Oh Cheery you have had a time of it. :rotfl: at the plumber waiting before sending invoice!! Bah! to cold tap though. I can sympathise as like KC said, houses are money pits! Once one thing is sorted, something else goes.
