That sounds high, but when we moved here two years ago & did it ourselves, it cost nearly that much between van rental, moving boxes, petrol, take-aways and not to mention how totally exhausted we were at the end of it all!
Never realized until you started chatting about it how very complicated the moving chain is here in the UK! What an eye opener!4 YEARS 10 MONTHS DEBT FREE!!! (24 OCT 2016)(With heartfelt thanks to those who have gone before us & their indubitable generosity.)...and now I have a mortgage! (23 AUG 2021)New projection - 14 YEARS 10 MONTHS LEFT OF 20 YEARS (reduced by 15 mths)Psst...I may have started a diary!0 -
Yep, tis indeed ridiculous RT!
Mr Cheery is all in favour of doing it ourselves - I am absolutely NOT as we have to be out of here and in the new place in one go and I just can't see how that is at all possible - the bloke yesterday was on about bringing 5 men and 3 vans
And yes, I have NO intention of moving all those millions of boxes myself
I'm more than happy to pay - although I'd rather pay less than £1050  :rotfl: :rotfl:
Having a housey day today, lovely long lie in reading my book, pottering about cleaning the kitchen, fixing the cupboard door before it falls off...
Was going to go for a walk but actually I'm really enjoying having the house to myself so I might not (also it's raining)

Received 2nd removals quote - £1390  :rotfl: :rotfl:
This one reckons we have 2256 square foot of stuff
I did get suspicious that they'd be expensive when he kept going on about being a 'new niche of professional removals' and raved about how they covered everything with fancy bags and hoovered up everywhere in the old house and the new :rotfl:
I'm sure that would suit some people down to the ground, but we were hoping for something rather more shabby :rotfl: :rotfl:
Hey ho. One more tomorrow, and another on Tuesday - and I've had two more recommendations I can ring if necessary.
This seems to be double what other people are saying they paid on the moving house thread - I think we've just got so many boxes people just don't want to do it:rotfl: :rotfl:

Morning MSE chums :hello:
Well, we had a flurry of excitement yesterday as we *nearly* exchanged! :j :j :j :j
Only NEARLY though :rotfl:
After speaking directly to our buyer (when still nothing had happened by Friday tea time) it turns out their buyer (at the bottom of the chain) had agreed to completion date, but didn't realise he had to exchange and pay a deposit before then...
Apparently he's now had a 'how to buy a house' lecture from their estate agent, and will be paying the deposit over the weekend, so we should all be set to go by Monday.
Goodness knows what happened there. Presumably his solicitor informed him of the process in a letter and he ignored it?! Who knows.
Let's hope nobody has cold feet over the weekend :eek:0 -
So, a couple of things to sort...
House insurance
Spoke to existing insurer - they will insure new house between exchange and completion - but only for 2 weeks and we're going to have 3.
After much faffing with comparison websites on Thursday (which I HATE as you know), I realised they were all saying 'we assume you own this house' and 'this is your main residence'. Well, it's not, just yet, and I couldn't find anything anywhere to say about insuring between exchange and completion.
Had a moment of inspiration and realised (and this is a shock) that I didn't have to follow Martin's advice about comparison websites!!    :rotfl: :rotfl:
So I rang M&S. After my broken boots experience the other week, I was craving an uncomplicated phone call with someone who would help me, rather than a fiasco of a call with someone who was trying to include as many get out clauses as possible
They were lovelyConfirmed I could start policy now and move in within 30 days (and it's fine for it to be unoccupied for that long). Said I could do it online for 20% discount but still have phone support if necessary. All done online - NO endless questions about trees, watercourses, value of contents, details of bicycles over £350, promises to never have anyone business-related round to the house etc.
Slightly more expensive of course, but while I'm normally most thrifty, I confess comparison websites and the threat of not having the right insurance are things that really stress me out, and so this was invaluable
£278 a year for buildings, contents and legal cover. All bikes covered without me having to list them separately, we can leave it unoccupied for 60 days (as opposed to our current 5 in the winter  ), Mr Cheery can have 10 people round for work a week without having to notify separately etc etc
Yes, yes, I'm trying to justify myself as I probably could have got it at least £60 cheaper a yearBut it was turned from a ludicrous chore into almost a pleasure and this week that's been priceless
I'm sure I'll feel differently when I'm not trying to arrange it while in the middle of moving house :rotfl:0 -
The m&s insurance sounds excellent. I don't mind paying a little extra for better service.
We moved ourselves, had to as it was very short notice just before Christmas. Borrowed a van and packing crates from his work, and a mate to help. Exhausting and someone broke the very expensive TV. We were lucky and had had the keys to the garage early so all of his hoard was moved in advance, and the keys to the house first thing as completion didn't actually happen till 5pm. I would not willingly move myself again.
If you do do it yourself don't pack too many books in each box. Once you are tired that weight is painful. My mortgage free diary: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6498069/whoops-here-comes-the-cheese

The last time we moved (halfway across the country) it cost £1200. They did everything and it was worth every single penny. I will never move myself ever again! Agree about the insurance, sometimes it's not worth the struggleLBM 1st Feb 2015 £18182 to go

Hello :hello:
Going with the folks who said £1050 (and who turned up on time :rotfl: ) only worry is they want to pack up the day before, but cos completion is looking like Monday, it'll be Saturday... so all our worldly goods will be in a lorry for 2 days  in a locked yard with proper security but still :eek:0 -
That will be amazing, just imagine how easy it will be to clean once the house is empty, borrow a blow up bed for the night and grab a takeaway and you!!!8217;re sorted."Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. C. Field.0

Indeed Pooky :j they did say we could keep the bed til the day :rotfl: I'm going to make a bid for keeping the sofa too :rotfl: and there will be a couple of last minute boxes of toiletries, towels, kitchen stuff etc.
Shouldn't take longer than an hour on the morning though, and then it'll probably take them a couple of hours to get the lorry over there (it's less than 30 miles but all teeny little country roads, people will be cursing us), so should be there by about 11.30, then we just have to wait for money to be sorted and keys released... Hoping that will be not far off lunchtime, then they can get off and we can have a stiff drink :rotfl: :rotfl:
