Argos, total incompetence

I could do with knowing what rights I have.

Argos delivered the wrong mattress today. Though the outside label corresponded with my order, the labels on the mattress, only discovered once the driver had gone, are for a totally different mattress. It is too big - a double and not a small double - and is of inferior quality.

They have already admitted it was a picking error.

Despite calling them within 20 minutes they have made no effort to pick up the mattress today. Instead, they booked in a collection and redelivery for 9 days away. It is a day when I'm at work.

Living in a small house, the mattress is tipped on its side in the living room. I have a toddler and it is a danger to her safety.

Argos don't seem to care.

Although it is easier and cheaper to get a new child than it is to get a new mattress, I really think you should do more to protect the child you have.

Please don't deliberately endanger the youngster.

    Ha ha. Very funny.
  • Put the mattress on its side in your bedroom? It does seem irresponsible to leave it where the child will be playing.

They are unlikely to be able to get back today, the driver's work will already be allocated for the full day. Have you asked why they cannot come back any sooner?

There's no space for the mattress. Unsurprisingly, wherever it would be it would be unsafe in such a small property, we don't have spare room for the odd double mattress. I'll reiterate my query, I could do with knowing what rights I have?

Argos have given me no reasons. All they've done is insinuate it's our fault for accepting the delivery (the packing slip was correct, the contents was not) and they rebooked a delivery with no consultation despite being promised a call back.

Have you read MSE's Failed Delivery article yet?

There is information in there about your rights, one of which is to do with arranging the second delivery at a mutually convenient date/time.

I read it. It's not really a delivery issue alone. I can't take time off, I teach. So it's not about financial compensation.

Argos are now saying the earliest Saturday collection would be 22 February. I'm in tears because this is really stressful and I don't have any storage options. Argos are unwilling to be a little creative and arrange for a quicker collection or book an alternative courier company. Why should I be left with the consequences of their picking incompetence?
  • Put it behind the sofa so it cannot fall. Move the sofa forward if you need to.

Perhaps if you call back when you are a little calmer. I find a calm and friendly manner gets far better results than tears and blame.

I wouldn't accept that, it's very shoddy treatment. I'd tell them I'll leave their mattress outside since there's no room indoors to store it. Bet they'll find a spare Saturday delivery slot then.

Husband texted to say he's found a temporary solution, so possibly behind the sofa. He's volunteering to take a day off. But why should he? All Argos have suggested are solutions based on our own initiative. Absolutely no assistance from them. It is shoddy.

Starrystarry, I nearly said that, as I stood in the doorway watching the most incredible rainstorm.
