Argos, total incompetence

You could ask if they could make your collection first or last call, so you do not need to take a day off, or at least not a full day. I am surprised that a teacher is so unresourceful.0

You have to take reasonable care and provide them with reasonable time to collect. Obviously this could be at their cost... Tell them their offer is unacceptable, you will arrange for a courier to come and collect the same and either store it at a storage facility - include your costs for the same with an admin fee - or send it back to their depot with said courier. Again with your bill on top. Give them 7 days. Done.0

As there's only 6 inches difference in width (they're the same length) between a small double and a normal double, why don't you simply put the bigger mattress under the smaller one on the bed, still in it's wrapper? There would only be 3 inches overhang each side, hardly noticeable. Surely it could stay like that for a few days until collected? I can't see that would inconvenience you too much.
Saying 'they have made no effort to pick up the mattress today' and talking about your 'rights', when it was only delivered earlier today is making you look not a little unreasonable. If you talk to them calmly and in a reasonable manner I'm sure they'll sort it out.0 -
Clearly some posters know little of teaching and lecturing. Still, by the facetious nature of the replies, it's not surprising.
I've been speaking to the CS manager all afternoon. Annie I suggested your solution but that was unacceptable to them.
Vectis, we don't have the space to store it like that. Expecting someone to take some initiative and ask the driver to revisit is hardly unreasonable. It's trying to deal with it whilst there's still a possibility of a quick solution. It is unreasonable that they didn't attempt to try that, whilst telling me they did.
Argos have come back to me and "as a goodwill gesture" have suggested I dispose of the mattress and not return it. I don't really understand how that is a solution. It still leaves the onus on me to deal with their incompetence.0 -

Sounds like a deal to me. You could sell it on ebay. 1 day sale, pick up only. Whatever you get for it you can put towards the cost of your new mattress.0 -

Quick phone call to local charity shop/organisation will see that mattress whipped away from your home at a convenient time for you. If you haven't the time then tell us your approx. location and I am sure someone will find a suitable home for it quickly.
As a teacher I am sure you spend time calming children down and putting things in perspective for them and the mantra "could be worse" is probably up there with the many prescribed sayings you give out.
This might be a fine time in which to take some of your own advice.0 -
Incredible. It's not unreasonable to ask what my rights are in terms of knowing what I can expect from argos in resolving their error.
Seems most people are interested in making personal, and unfounded, judgements.0 -
The goodwill offer is extremely generous IMHO.0

If you dispose of the mattress as suggested by the CS advisor, make sure that you get confirmation that you can do this in writing (e-mail will be fine) before letting it go.
The last thing that you want is for Argos to deny saying this and without proof, it will be your word against theirs.
If you advertise it on Gumtree, you may well find that someone contacts you within a couple of hours of it being listed..0 -

It really depends on the price that Argos paid for the mattress from their suppliers.
It might work out more expensive to get it collected and sent back to their distribution hub, after which it will probably have to be inspected before being resold.
Add to this all of the paperwork involved and giving the mattress away might not be an act of generosity, simply one of economics.0
